Yuan Longping, known as the Father of Hybrid Rice, was born in Beijing in 1930. He traced his ancestral roots to Dean, Jiangxi. After completing his education at Southwest Agriculture College, he became a teacher at Anjiang Agriculture College. In 1964, he married Deng Zhe. Yuan's illustrious career includes being an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Director of the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center, and Chief Adviser to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. His journey0 when he stumbled upon a natural hybrid rice plant. By 1973, he had successfully developed the three-department method for hybrid rice cultivation. His research on the two-line method was later classified as a national "863" project, and in 1995, two-line hybrid rice was produced and widely applied. Yuan also set ambitious goals for super rice, aiming to achieve high yields per mu. His efforts were recognized with numerous awards, including the National Invention of Special National Top Science and Technology Award and more than 11 international awards. Yuan's hybrid rice has been introduced in over 30 countries, significantly increasing global food production and securing his legacy as a pioneer in agricultural science.
