Procedures and Anatomy of a Resume
When Drafting Your Resume • All resumes will be one page in length. GBCS recognizes that many of you may have enough experience to warrant more than a single page resume, based upon recruiter feedback, they want one page and in a consistent, standard formats. • Be consistent with punctuation. No lines or underlining will be used in the resume.• Always have two or more bullet points under each section. Avoid the lone bullet point if possible. • Do not use acronyms without any prior explanation. Write them out in full. • Do not use contractions (e.g., didn’t, can’t, etc.) and decrease the use of passive voice (e.g., am, is, was, etc.)
Font • The font style used will be Times New Roman; the font size will be 10, 11 or 12 point, with the exception of the “NAME,” which will be 14 point.Heading • All margins (top, bottom, left, and right), should be between 1” and 0.5”. • Do not make your top, bottom, left, and right margins smaller than a half-inch; it makes your resume appear over crowded and cumbersome to read.• The student’s name will be placed at the top of the page, centered in 14 point font, with text in UPPERCASE BOLD. Y our current contact information will be centered beneath your name. • Contact information should include a phone number, postal address and an e-mail address (ensure that you check it often and that it is professional in nature).• The contact information will be the same size font as the rest of the resume (Times New Roman 10 pt).
Education • List your degree title/s, institution/s and the years that you have achieved these degrees.• If you will be obtaining a joint- or dual-degree, each degree will be listed separately. • It is recommended that the most career-related degree should be listed first. • Y our GPA/GMAT score is optional and can be listed. Only list your GPA if above 3.5 and GMAT if above 650. Y our graduation date should list the month and year.• If you list a scholarship, consider quantifying its prestige (e.g., top 10%, 5 out of 100 selected, etc.)• Don’t capitalize your Latin honors (e.g., cum laude, summa cum laude, etc.)
Experience • Use the STAR Method (Situation, Task, Action, and Results) and don’t forget the results. • Y our first bullet point under your most recent job is the most important. Identify your least impressive bullet and make it stronger if possible. Address specific job requirements using your relevant experience.• Use action verbs to highlight your experience. Y ou should vary your language with each bullet point. Avoid excessive use of commonly-used verbs (e.g., managed, organized, directed, assisted, etc.)• Quantify your experience if possible. Be specific when discussing: percent of sales, how many people you managed, how much did you increase sales, how long did you oversee the project, etc.• Showcase transferable skills/strengths that are most relevant from former positions to the targeted position.Additional Data • Do not list any unrelated personal information (e.g., age, marital status, height, weight, family, politics, religion, etc.). Also, do not list hobbies unless they’re relevant to the job or career path. • List your most impressive information first (e.g. multiple languages, advanced computer skills, etc.)Remember...
