The moon sheds her liquid light silently over the leaves and flowers, which, in the floating transparency of a bluish haze from the pond, look as if they had just been bathed in milk, or like a dream wrapped in a gauzy hood. Although it is a full moon, shining through a film of clouds, the light is not at its brightest; it is, however, just right for me--a profound sleep is indispensable, yet a snatched doze also has a savour of its own. The moonlight is streaming down through the foliage, casting bushy shadows on the ground from high above, dark and checkered, like an army of ghosts; whereas the benign figures of the drooping willows, here and there, look like paintings on the lotus leaves. The moonlight is not spread evenly over the pond, but rather in a harmonious rhythm of light and shade, like a famous melody played on a violin.

A wise man once said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. So, as a police officer, I have some urgent things to say to good people.
Day after day my men and I struggle to hold back a tidal wave of crime. Something has gone terribly wrong with our once-proud American way of life. It has happened in the area of values. A key ingredient is disappearing, and I think I know what it is: accountability.
Accountability isn't hard to define. It means that every person is responsible for his or her actions and liable for their consequences. Of the many values that hold civilization together, accountability may be the most important of all. Without it, there can be no respect, no trust, no law, and ultimately, no society.
My job as a police officer is to impose accountability on people who refuse, or have never learned, to impose it on themselves. But as every policeman knows, external controls on people's behavior are far less effective than internal restraints such as guilt, shame and embarrassment.
Fortunately there are still communities, smaller towns, usually where schools maintain discipline and there parents hold up standards that proclaim: "In this family certain things are not tolerated; they simply are not done!" Yet more and more, especially in our larger cities and suburbs, these inner restrains are loosening. Your typical robber has gone. He considers your property his property: he takes what he wants, including your life if you enrage him.

中国的言情小说在历史上曾经有过两次大的浪潮，一次是在明清之际，以才子佳人小说为代表，一次是在民初时期。

据记载，民国初年上海发行的小说中，按其内容十有八九为言情之作。

言情小说在小说中占据如此之高的比例，是罕见的，所以称它为言情小说浪潮。

民初的言情小说浪潮起自晚清，它与当时翻译小说有着密切的联系。

晚清的翻译小说浪潮是由林纾翻译《巴黎茶花女遗事》(La Dame aux Camélias)开始的。

在此之前中国虽也翻译了一些外国小说，但是却始终未能形成气候，成为浪潮。

林纾翻译的《巴黎茶花女遗事》在当时中国人的眼里，就是一部言情小说。

民初的言情小说浪潮，直接受到翻译的外国小说影响。

在某种意义上，我们几乎可以说它的形成与它的形态，都是在翻译的外国小说影响下造成的，它因此不同于传统的才子佳人小说。
