Vowel Pronunciation Game
Each student receives a card (or cards).
Practice pronouncing the vowels and try to match words with the same vowel sounds (don’t let the spelling fool you!).

RHYME
– Presumptuous, Voluptuous – Endanger, Engager – Efficient, proficient
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Rhyme Scheme
AA, BB, or AB, AB rhyme scheme Both lines with a similar rhythm, end with rhyming word.
AA, BB - Couplets
The snow fell softly all the night, It made a blanket soft and white. It covered houses, flowers and ground, But did not make a single sound.

Rhyme and Slant Rhyme
Standard rhymes share the last TWO syllables of the word.
Words that share only ONE syllable in a word are called “slant rhyme.”
Rhythm Example (3 beats)
Kids play ball. The kids play ball. The kids are playing ball. The kids are playing with the ball. The kids have been playing with the ball.
Pronunciation
English spelling is CRAZY, especially with vowels!
Often words that are spelled the same are pronounced very differently:
– Read (present tense sounds like: reed) – Read (past tense sounds like: red) – Trough (troff) vs. though (th-oh)
SLANT RHYME
– Park, start – Deep, creek – Wake, great
Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune without the words, And never stops at all.
Write your poem! Read it aloud to make sure the rhythm and rhyme are correct.
