Good morning, class.Taday we’ll talk something about famous universities in the worl d.First I’ll show some pictures to you.It’s very beautiful,right?This is the University o f Oxford.These buildings look very ancient and majestic.They are the castles.Every ti me I look at this pictures,I always think of Harry Potter,the world of magic.Next,I’ll give more details about the University of Oxford.It was founded in 1167 in Oxford city.Actually,before the 12th century,there was no universities in England.Man y English people had to come to France and Italy for study.At that time,Paris was the centre of culture.But in 1167,the king of England quarrelled with the king of France f or some reasons.The king of England was so angry that he forbade English people fro m studying in France.He also ordered to build a palace in Oxford.This palace was buil t for sclolars and students.As time went by,it developed from a palace into a university .The motto of Oxford is Dominus illuminatio mea.This is Latin.In English,it means th e lord is my light.As time went by,Oxford was morn open to students.Many students were admitted to Oxford without observing old rules.Also,many famous people came from this universi ty.Therewere 6 kings of England and 11 kings from other countries studied in Oxford.53 presi dents and prime ministers from 19 countries graduated from Oxford,including 25 prim e ministers of England.Oxford also produced 47 Nobel Prize winners. These students were leaders of nations,but other students were the cause of events.In 1209,a student in Oxford killed a local woman by accident when he was practisin g shooting arrow.It result in a violent conflict between students and citizens.The king sent soldiers to suppress students’ demonstration.The University of Oxford was forced to be divided into several parts.As a result some scholars and students moved out fro m Oxford.They came to Cambridge,a small city near the Oxford.The studied and live d in there.Nowadays,we call it University of Cambridge.There are some pictures of Cambridge.It’s also beautiful like Oxford.Although these two universities were very close to each other,there were still some differences betwee n these two universities.In Oxford people always ask you what do you know?While in Cambridge,people always ask you what do find?In other words,Oxford paid more att ention to help students develop a thought in their minds.However,Cambridge was mor e likely to lead students to find something from the nature.So aswe can see,Oxford produced more leaders of nations,and Cambridge produced more scientists on nature.Oxford and Cambridge have the same organization of management.Theybothsetchancellorandvicechancellor.Chancellor is the head of management,like president and vice president.But chancellor is a honorary title.The chancellor is always someone who has high prestig e in the society.Although the chancellor is the head of management,he doesn’t do any business in the daily affairs.The vice chancellor has the real power.He manages everyt hing in school.There are something interesting here.While the Cambridge has a comp etition with Oxford in every part,but now,they have the same chancellor The Prince P hilip.I think that what makes the Cambridge famous is the River Cam.It can be heared of f rom many works of literature.Every summer in River Cam,there would be a boating c ompetition between Oxford and Cambridge.In Cambridge,there was a secret club,called Adherent Party.Adherent Party had 12 m embers.All of them were the most intelligent students in Cambridge.They were clever and smart.They were born in upper class families.Every Saturday,they would have a meeting in a secret place.They cametogether and discussed the philosophy,politics andeconomy.They all thought they would be the future of England.They would come to p ower in future.When these members graduated,they would choose new members.And the old members would be called Angels.There were some famous people in Adherent Party.There were many famous scientists and scholars came from Cambridge,and 78 Nobe l Prize winners graduated from Cambridge.In some ways,they changed the world.Although there were many many famous people graduated from Cambridge,I’ll intru duce a normal person to you.This person was different.He was not scientists or famou s scholars.Maybe most of you didn’t know his name.But he made a difference in Ame rica,and what he did was so significant that all American people would keep him in mi nd forever.He graduated from Cambridge,and went to America in 1637.But he didn’t adjust to t he new environment,then he got sick,and died in 1638.It was a pity that he just lived i n America for one year.At that time,the United States of America was not founded,and there was no universities for young people.After he was died,he devoted his wealth a nd books to a local school.Now,this school is the best and richest school in theworld.We call it Harvard University,and the person’s name is John Harvard.Several ye ars later,people wanted to build a statue in honour of John Harvard.But at that time,the re were no any pictures of John Harvard.So people chose a very handsome student in Harvard University as a model.Now you look at this statue,this was not the real John Harvard.It’s just a handsome student in Harvard University. Ok,allofthesearefamousuniversitiesintheworld.Sometimes,we may think they are too far for us.We can’t reach them.But we kn ow nothing is impossible.Maybe one day we areadmittedtotheseuniversitiesforsomereasons.So,everyone come on,do our best to make a difference for ourselves.Do what we should do and wait for result.We can make it.。
