Terms used for the order of multiple births in human beings are largely derived from the Latin names for numbers.

Multiple Births A birth becomes a multiple birth when more than one infant is delivered. The most common of the multiple births occurs with twins. Twins account for around 95 percent of multiple births. Multiples can result in either the splitting of an egg or the fertilization of multiple eggs. When a fertilized egg splits after pregnancy, this results in a multiple birth with physically and genetically identical children.
