Different cultural values of China and America Guashais a movie about different culture between America and China.Itaimesto show the misunderstanding,conflict and fusion caused by the different cultural values of two countries.Cultural values is the condensation of culture,it is often defined as some creed or characteristics which are useful,correct and valuable.But it is also regional and contradictory. So next I will interpret the different cultural valuesof twocountries and discuss the enlightenment on cross-cultural communication.After seeing the film,Icouclude the following four aspects of the cultural values between China and America.Firstly,It is about ethical conflict—the family and the law.Aswe know,mostchinese people are affected by traditional culture,they are willing to show their respect for others to get harmonious interpersonal relationship.And family occupies the central position in China,they value all family members and obey their own principle.AlthoughXu Datong moved to America for many years,he still approves C hina’s traditional cultural values.Forexample,whenDatong has a stable living in America,he receives his father to enjoy a happy life with them.Therefore,family affection plays an important part in Xu D atong’s heart.So when it comes to the conflict of values,it is always in the upper hand.While Americans often pay attention to personality and believe in independence,theywill do things rationally not rashly,because they have a strong belief on law,they think facts and dvidence are more important than family affection.Therefore,whenDatong said he loves his son very much but coundn’t prove Guasha is a traditional cure way in China,American judge doesn’t believe him at all.On the contrary,he only believe s the law and evidence,so in this aspect,the family affection of China and the rational point and the law of America make two countries produce a contradiction.Secondly,It is about the conflict of treating things, including human feeling and facts.Americans like grasping reliable information and insisting the correct viewpoint,forexample,in the film, American doctors can hardly believeGuasha on the back is a way of curingfever,and the bruise on Dennis’back makes it harder for datongto argue on the thecourt,atlast,the court cancledXu D atong’s custody.Thus it can be seen,Americans like to deal with things based on fact.But in Chinese people’s eyes,sometimeshuman feeling is more important than facts,especially in the relationship with friends and family, they won’t think more about the returns or consequences.For instance, when grandpa got into trouble outside, Xu Datong still took his father home immediately regardless of the danger of breaking the law.for most Chinese people,they think American law is ruthless,it can’t compare with china’s human feeling,at this point,the Chinese concept of “human”and the “fact”of the American people form intense conflict, and it Vividly showed in front of everyone, making people into infinite ponder.Thirdly,It is about the conflict of face perception:derogation and respect.WhenDennis played with the boss’s son,they argued and then beated with each other,Xu Datong let Dennis apologize to his boss’s son but refused,this aroused his anger,so he slapped Dennis in the face in the presence of his boss,because he thinks it can get his and the boss’s face sback,then he said to his boss:“whatIdid is to save your face and show respect for you ”,but the boss is hard to understand this behavior,he thinks this kind of behavior shows no respect for the child,in his eyes,respect others is to save your face,derogate yourself and respect others has nothing to do with,besides,children have the same right to share equal legal personality,but for Chinese people,derogate ourselves is to respect othersand save their faceunder the same circumstances,Americans think business be business,they seldom consider human feeling on the matter of principle,compared with Americans’ face perception,C hina’s is more profound and complex.Fourthly, It is about the conflict of attitude towardsfriendship,including feeling and honesty.We know,friends contain different meaningsin the east and the west culture.Americans’ attitude towards friendship is very feeble,once they find their friends hode something or did something wrong,they will leave or condemn their friends due to rational concept.Although a lot Americans keep many friendly and informal relationship with their friends,they rarely have that kind of deep and sustaining relationship for many years.They often choose their friends on the basic ofattracted and sweet personal feelings,at the same time,they separate friend relationship from social pared with Americans,Chinese people are more likely to have few lifetime confidants,they have deep friendship and are glad to help each other when needed, so when Kunla pointed out Xu D atong’s beating the child in court,Xu Datong feels very surprised and angry,he accused Kunla of being betrayed him in court.He cann’t accept his friends help his adversaries,so he resigned and showed Kunla his anger,andkunlafeels aggrieved.InAericans’eyes,honesty is one of the most basic virtues, lying is equivalent to let a person give up basic values,for this matter,Chinese’s wish for a friend is higher than an American.On the whole,in the process of cross-cultural communication,wecann’t eliminate cultural differences and conflicts,so we should learn different culture from each other, and make a
