Be My Lover Be My LoveI can never forget The Lover since I first met her. She was written by Marguerite Duras, who is one of my favorite writers. Duras was described as a mysterious woman when people mentioned her. She was born in Vietnam, and came back to France when she was 18. The experience when living in Asian and the different Eastern culture all gave her an unforgettable impression.The Lover was written when Duras in her seventies. It is said by all the people that this one is more like an autobiography. People always say Duras understand desire, and expound love. The Lover was the last time Duras yelled at the lost time and life. After reading this, you may have a better understanding about desire and love.The Lover tells a story about a teenaged girl and a middle aged man. In the story, they both have no name. The man never called the girl, and so did the girl, she just described him as Chinamen. The man came from China, and he has a rich but traditional family. The girl is French, but she was born in Vietnam. Her mother was just like thousands of French, who were cheated by the France government to settle in Vietnam. They met each other on the board of a ship when crossing the Mekong River. The man came forward to the girl just wanna talk to her. At that time, the man was attracted by the girl all by sex desire. The girl looked at him, and accepted his invitation to go with him on the way back to her school. Certainly she didn’t love the guy, and she did that because of the money.Later, she became the man’s lover. She often came to the man’s house making love with him. They made love every day, seemed never tired. Time after time, they tried to convince themselves that there is only desire of sex and money between them, nothing else. But one day, when they were making love again, the man told the girl” Go with me. I want to take you away. Go with me!” But the girl says” No, I can’t. I’m too young. I can’t leave my mother and my little brother.” The story was doomed to be a tragedy from then on.Afterwards, the man’s family forces him to married a rich woman who he had never seen before, or they would cut the financial support to the man. The man compromised, coz he can’t live with their support. Although he had tried to ask the girl to go with him, but that was destined could n’t work. Even though the girl can finally leave her family, the man can not support they two, coz he has no money and no job.In the end, the man married another woman. On that day, the girl sat on a bridge watching the wedding parade. The world seemed all happy but definitely there’s no joy in their heart.Also on the board of a ship, but this time the ship was sailed to France. The girl was on board without the man. She would leave Vietnam and back to France with her mother. When the ship began to sail, she saw a familiar black car in a corner. She knew it was him.The night on board was very silence, just like the day she met the Chinamen. The girl was standing on the deck. The moon looks a little sorrow. There floated some music from far way. Suddenly, the girl burst into cry, she memorized once upon a time, and she fell in love with a man, who she called him Chinamen.Decades years later, after the girl’s marriage, gave birth to baby and divorce, one day, she received a call, which from the Chinamen. He said he had come to France with his wife, and he still loved her.The whole story was full of depress, replying a feeling that sorrow and unfortunates in life. And describe the upset about the beauty in life. Love can not bring us happy for certainly. But the beauty of the story is also because of its desperation. The love showed by Duras was desperate, the soul is desperate, body is desperate, even the language is desperate. The same desperation was happened on the love between the teenaged white France girl and the middle aged yellow Chinaman on the Mekong River.The novel picture the story by crisscrosses the pictures, which just reflects the desperate depression in the commit incest love between the two persons. This kind of depression and sorrow just recall me of the same kind of story called Lolita, which also tells a commit incest love between a little girl and her step-father. The same kind of depression, gloomy and hot, they all make people addicted to the story just like a person who is addicted in drag. You just could n’t stop but watching it.Actually, I know the girl love the man, not because of the man, but because of love itself. The girl just wants to love and be loved, whatever the person is. She is a white girl living in Vietnam and feel herself was above other people, but unfortunately she was poor and she wanted to change this very much. So she likes wearing boy’s hat and shoes with gold side. When the rich Chinamen appears she knows her chance was really coming. But she did want love, so at last she fell in love with the Chinamen. Then we come back to the man. I think he is really a cowardly man. We can defined that at the first time he met the girl and tried to give her a cigarette, at that time his trembling hand told us everything. He was kind of afraid, because he is a yellow man though he was rich. This kind of racialism has a deep root in the society. But he is also a poor man, he had nothing but money. He was crying after making love because he knew this love had no result. He wanted to married the girl who he loved very much but he could not defeat the traditional view, he was afraid. So he compromised in the end.As you may know, this is a tragedy. The sorrow had showed up when the characters’ first met. This is doomed to be a tragedy. Duras, my dear, you give me love but make me desperate all the time. Just as the Chinamen, I know he really want to tell the French girl that “Please be my lover be my love.” And so does the girl when she on the board the night.。
