Wi-Fi Display Overview
Wi-Fi Display Introduction
• This presentation focuses on the specification and possible use cases for Wi-Fi Display technology.
• The Wi-Fi Alliance is developing a “Wi-Fi Display Specification” to enable and sustain a secure connection between multimedia devices, based on Wi-Fi, to facilitate audio/video rendering
– The draft specification is currently available only to Wi-Fi Alliance Display Task Group members – The specification is planned for broad membership and public release at the time when certification for Wi-Fi Display technology becomes available – Members will be able to certify their devices for the Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi Display certification program using a test plan written for this specification
Wi-Fi Alliance Member (Login required)
Only available to Wi-Fi Display Technical taskgroup members
Non-member (Purchase required) Not yet available
Available for purchase at
– Functionality beyond the scope of the Wi-Fi Display specification will be identified but not discussed – Details of prerequisite certifications shall not be discussed in this module
Wi-Fi Protected Setup™
WMM Power Save
Approved11n / WMM® / WPA2™
• Wi-Fi Direct shall be enabled out-of-the-box
• TDLS, if implemented, shall be enabled out-of-the-box

Wi-Fi Display Sink
• PC: Notebook computer (although could include other PC form factors) • Session: A Wi-Fi Display connection between a Source and a Sink device where content is sourced at the Source device and rendered at the Sink device.
Wi-Fi Direct™
(including L2 Service Discovery option)
Note : TDLS does not work for WFD use cases where the Source, Sink, or both do not have access to an AP

Overview of Wi-Fi Display
• Critical terminology
– Wi-Fi Display devices can be used in homes, home offices, small offices, public access environments like hotspots, hotels, conventions centers, and large enterprises
• No need to find a cable with the correct type of connectors being readily available • No need to determine the appropriate port on the display device (usually in a hard to reach place) • No need to worry about passing cables around to switch from one source to another
– Source : A device that is capable of transmitting multimedia content – Sink : A device that is capable of receiving and rendering multimedia content

Wi-Fi Display Certification Requirements
• All WFD Source and Sink devices shall pass the following WFA certifications

Wi-Fi Display Program Objectives
• Mirror a wired setup between a Source and Sink
– Establish a point-to-point connection between Source and Sink. – Wherever possible, end-user Wi-Fi Display experience should mirror the wired experience in all ease of use, device discovery and quality of the rendered content

Wi-Fi Display Market Target
• WFD functionality targets both the entertainment and business markets
– Enables easy sharing of content (both audio and video) and leverages the flexibility of wireless
• Topology: The arrangement in which the nodes of a network are connected to each other and (in some cases) to other networks
• TDLS: Tunneled Direct Link Setup. An 802.11 protocol to setup a direct Wi-Fi link between two peer client devices (STAs) that are members of the same BSS
– This training is based on a specification that is still undergoing revision.
• W-Fi Alliance provides NO GUARANTEE of the degree to which this training material represents the final Wi-Fi Display specification
• This presentation shall use “WFD” as an abbreviation for the technology

Basic Wi-Fi Display Definitions
• Source: A Wi-Fi Display device that is capable of transmitting content • Sink: A Wi-Fi Display device that is capable of receiving and rendering content
• Key components of Wi-Fi Display
– Enable and sustain connection – discover, pair, and sustain a Wi-Fi connection between the source and sink to facilitate display of audio/video content on the sink – Easy to setup and configure, straight forward to discover and identify the appropriate device to securely connect to and simple to start/control/stop the display function – Provide at a minimum, the security of a typical Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ link between the Source and Sink – Provide a mechanism so the Source and Sink can select the „best operating channel‟ to mitigate potential RF interference from the environment: home, office, etc...
• The branded name for this technology is to-be-determined
– Only devices certified for Wi-Fi Display shall be able to use the brand and supporting marketing material
