1. eager (adj.) 热切的,渴望的be eager to do sth. 渴望做某事I was eager to get back to work as soon as possible. 我迫不及待地想尽快回去工作。

be eager for 渴望得到He is eager for success. 他渴望取得成功。

eagerly (adv.) (= in an eager way) 热切地,渴望地eagerness (n.) [U] 渴望People were pushing each other out of the way in their eagerness to get to the front.人们争先恐后地互相推搡,都渴望到前方。

eager beaver (n.) [C] 过分热切之人;干活特别卖力的人2. be willing to do乐意做某事How much are they willing to pay? 他们愿意付多少钱?3. expect (vt.)(1) 预料;预计,认为……会发生I expect John home at six o’clock. 我预计约翰6点钟到家。

expect to do sth.预料某事I expect to be back within a week. 我预料在一周内回来。

expect sb. / sth. to do sth. 预料某人做某事I didn’t expect him to stay so long. 我没有料到他会待这么长时间。

expect (that) 预料某事I expected that she’ll pass the exam. 我预料她会通过考试的。

as expected 正如所期待的/ 正如所预料的As expected, the whole family was shocked by the news.正如所预料中的,全家都被这消息震惊了。

(2) 指望,期盼expect sth. from / of sb. 指望某人某事The officer expects complete obedience from his troops.这位军官认为他的军队理应绝对服从。

expected (adj.) 期待中的unexpected (adj.) 未料到的expectation (n.) [C, U] 预期,预期的事物4. complain (vi.) to 抱怨,投诉complain (that) 抱怨某事They complained that the wages were too low. 他们抱怨他们的薪水太低了。

(2) 排除;除去The college removed rules that prevented women from enrolling.大学废除了关于妇女不能入学的规定。

(3) 开除,把……解聘Congress could remove the President from office. 议会可以弹劾总统。

be far removed from something 与……相差甚远,与……非常不同The events in the newspaper article were far removed from reality.报纸上的文章报道的事件与事实相差甚远。

7. settle (v.)(1) 安放,安顿She settled the child on the sofa. 她把小孩放在沙发上。

(2) (尤指从高处、从飞行等中) 栖息;降落A bird settled on the branch. 一只鸟停在枝头上。

(3) (使) 平静,(使) 安定;平息The medicine should settle your nerves/ your stomach. 这种药该会使你的神经安定下来/ 使你的胃舒服一些。

(4) 决定,确定That’s settled; we’ll go tomorrow. 就这么定了,我们明天去。

(5) 移居于The American West was hardly settled until the 19th century. 美国西部在19世纪前几乎没有人移居。

settle down / settle sb. down(1) (使) 舒适的坐下She settled (herself) down in a chair with a book and a cup of tea.她拿着一本书和一杯茶舒适地在椅子上坐下来。

(2) 安顿下来,过安定的生活I hate all this travel; I want to get married and settle down. 我讨厌到处跑;我想结婚过安定日子。

settle down to sth. / doing sth. 开始专心于(某项活动或工作等)I must settle down to my homework. 我必须安下心来做家庭作业。

settlement (n.) (争执、问题等的)解决、协议;和解;移民,殖民settler (n.) [C] 移民,殖民者8. put/ place great / high value on 看重,认为……很重要They put great value on the local products. 他们非常看重当地的特产。

9. explore (vt.)(1) 探险,勘探explore the Antarctic regions 考察南极(2) 探究We must explore all the possibilities. 我们必须探讨所有的可能性。

explorer (n.) [C] 探险家,浏览器,探测器10. plain (adj.)(1) 清楚的,明显的make yourself plain ( = make what you are saying clear) 使自己的话清楚易懂If you do that again you will be severely punished. Do I make myself plain?如果你再这样做,你就会受到惩罚。

我讲的够清楚了吗?(2) 简单的,普通的The document was sent in a plain brown paper envelope. 这个文件装在一个普通的棕色信封里送出。

11. reveal (vt.)(1) 揭示,揭露,泄露Do you promise not to reveal my secret? 你能答应不把我的秘密泄露出去吗?(2) 展现,显露出The curtains opened, to reveal a darkened stage. 大幕拉开,露出一个黑暗的舞台。

12. hold up (v.)(1) 推迟,(使) 耽搁The building of the new road has been held up by bad weather.新公路的建造由于天气不好而耽搁下来了。

(2) 支撑,支持;举起The roof is held up by massive stone pillars. 这个屋顶有无数根石柱子支撑着。

(3) 提出……(作为榜样),展示The old man always held up his youngest son as a model of hard work.那位老人总是举出自己的小儿子作为勤奋工作的榜样。

13. be supposed to (to be / do)(1) 应该;被期望或被要求(是/ 做某事)Everyone is supposed to bring a bottle to the party.每个人都要带一瓶酒参加晚会。

(2) 意图是,打算,旨在This law is supposed to help the poor. 这条法律旨在帮助穷人。

14. live (adj.)(1) 活生生的,有生命的(只用在名词前,一般用来修饰物,不修饰人)experiments on live animals 用活体做的实验(2) (广播等) 现场直播的,实况转播的It was not a recorded show; it was live. 这不是放录像节目,这是实况转播。

15. tricky (adj.) 复杂的,棘手的,微妙的I’m in a rather tricky position; can you help me out?我处境非常尴尬,你能帮我摆脱困境吗?trick (n.) [C] 把戏,花招16. refer (v.) (referred, referred)(1) 提到,说到We agreed never to refer to the matter again. 我们同意以后不要再提到这件事了。
