As it was getting late, we started looking for a motel, only to find that all were booked. Finally, around 9p.m. we stopped at a gas station to fill up on gas. My husband asked for a phone book and told the woman at the counter that we were trying to find a motel. He tried for 15 minutes. When he was unsuccessful, the woman, Linda, said she and her family lived nearby and would be happy if we spent the night ather home, My husband was stunned at her offer. She called her son to direct us, since she had to hold fort at the gas station till midnight. When we reached their home, her husband greeted us. He took out two sleeping bags for the children. He invited us to have coffee and chat while we waited for his wile. When she came back, we asked if we could slip away in the morning so as not to disturb them. They said we were now guests and we would have to have breakfast with them.We woke up to table set for breakfast. They’d made a mountain of pancakes and bacon. We ate breakfast, and when we were leaving, my husband asked if he could offer some payment. They insisted we were their guests. We left moved by their spirit of hospitality(好客). Looking for Motel.CBlack Friday come of age in the 1980s, kicking off the holiday shopping season. The race once ended in tragedy when 2,000 shoppers burst through the doors at a Wal-Mart on Long Island, NY, in 2008 and trampled(踩) an employee to death before the 5am opening, all in the name of finding a bargain.Since 2011, several retailers(零售商) –including Toys “R”Us, Macy’s, Wal-Mart and Target –have introduced shopping on Thanksgiving night, turning what was once a day of feasting, family and football into one more day for shopping, one more day for retail workers to be on the job.Thanksgiving deserves to be celebrated as a holiday all its own. It has been a unique American tradition since Abraham Lincoln declared a national day of Thanksgiving, a holiday that all families, despite their race, religion or culture, can share. The good news this year is that the public is pushing back against shopping on Thanksgiving Day. In a survey by Deloitte this fall, 67% of shoppers said they disagreed with stores being open on Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, Black Friday has lost some of its appeal. Foot traffic(人流量) has been down is recent years. And net sales in stores have declined. Special discounts are offered earlier in November, so there’s no point in waiting until Friday. Customers are getting used to shoppingonline at their leisure. Over the past year, online shopping grew far fast than overall sales, boosted in part by online’s continuing unfair sales tax advantage over stores.None of this is to suggest that there’s anything wrong with shopping. Retailing is a huge driver of the US economy, generating jobs in manufacturing and employing more than 10 million retail sales workers. But for the final Thursday each November, it would be better to give it a rest.28. Why did 2,000 shoppers rush into a Wal-Mart on Long Island in 2008?A. To buy thanksgiving gifts.B. To protest against online shopping.C. T o celebrate Black Friday.D. T o find a bargain.29. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Some people think Thanksgiving Day a time for celebration.B. People can get the highest discount on Thanksgiving Day.C. All the people prefer to go shopping online.D. More and more people don’t like to celebrate Thanksgiving Day.30. What does the underlined word “boosted”mean?A. Declined.B. Promoted.C. Decreased.D. Appealed.31. What can we infer from the passage?A. Black Friday is a holiday set up by Abraham Lincoln.B. Black Friday darkened the mod of American customers.C. Retailing has made great contributions to the US economy.D. Shopping will be forbidden on Thanksgiving Day.DLike it or love it, social media is a major part of life. Clicking on a thumbs-up or a heart icon (图标) is an easy way to stay in touch. Whether you’re on Facebook, What’s App or Twitter, the way of keeping in touch is no longer face to face, but instead screen to screen, highlighted by the fact that more than 1 billion people are using Facebook every day. Social media has become second nature —but what impact is this having on us?Lauren Sherman and her team, who study the brain at Temple University in Philadelphia, mixed 20 teens’photos with 10 other pictures from public Instagram accounts. Then they randomly gave half of the images many likes (between 23 and 45; most had more than 30). They gave the other half no more than 22 likes (most had fewer than 15).The researchers wanted to find out how the participants’brains were responding to the different images. While the teens were in a machine, researchers asked them to either like an image or skip to the next one. Teens were much more likely to like images that seemed popular —those that had more than 23 likes, Sherman’s team found. The kids tended to skip pictures with few likes. As part of the experiment, participants were also shown a range of “neutral”photos showing things like food and friends, and “risky”photos concerning cigarettes and alcohol. When looking at photos showing risky behaviors, such as smoking or drinking —no matter how many likes they had —the brain region linked to cognitive (认知的) control tended to become less active. These kinds of pictures can lower the viewer’s self-control. That means what you like online has the power to influence not just what others like, but even what they do. Viewing pictures like these could make teens let down their guard when it comes to experimenting with drugs and alcohol, Sherman worries.32. What does the text focus on?A. The influence of social media.B. The self-control of teens.C. The behaviors of teens.D. The popularity of social media.33. Which of the following might be included in the experiment?A. Seventeen images are given 20 likes.B. Fifteen images are given 25 likes.C. Fifteen images are given 42 likes.D. Eight images are given 40 likes.34. What’s Sherman’s concern about online photos?A. More likes may be given.B. Misbehaviors may be encouraged.C. More risky pictures may be posted.D. Cognitive control may become less active.35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A. T o condemn immoral social behaviors.B. To promote modern social media.C. T o introduce a new research.D. T o explain the brain system.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
