1960年，北京大学建立政治学系，1963年改名为国际政治学系。
国际关系学院即由此发展而来。
1996—1998年，原北京大学国际政治学系、国际关系研究所和亚非研究所经合并调整，组成现在的北京大学国际关系学院。
目前，国际关系学院由5个系和3个研究所组成，即国际政治系、外交学与外事管理系、国际政治经济学系、比较政治学系、国际组织与国际公共政策系、国际关系研究所、亚非研究所、世界社会主义研究所。
此外还管理着20多个科研中心。
教学辅助机构和行政机构包括院行政办公室、教务办公室、党委办公室、财务办公室、学生工作办公室、国际项目办公室、继续教育办公室、网络办公室、《国际政治研究》编辑部以及北大图书馆国关分馆等。
学院现有3个本科、9个硕士和6个博士专业对外招生，即本科的国际政治、外交学、国际政治经济学，硕士的国际政治、国际关系、外交学、国际政治经济学、中外政治制度、中共党史、科学社会主义与国际共产主义运动、国际组织与国际公共政策，博士的国际关系、国际政治、外交学、科学社会主义与国际共产主义运动、中外政治制度、国际政治经济学。
其中国际政治、科社与国际共运是全国重点学科。
学院还与北大政府管理学院、马克思主义学院共同设立了政治学博士后科研流动站。
国际办学已成为学院的办学特色。
学院现与英国伦敦经济政治学院、瑞士日内瓦高等国际关系与发展学院、法国巴黎政治学院、日本东京大学、日本早稻田大学、美国蒙特雷国际关系学院均有联合培养的双学位项目;与日本东京大学、韩国首尔国立大学共同执行三国间政府项目“亚洲校园计划”。
参加联合学位及英文授课硕士项目的国际学生每年超过50人。
此外，学院与美国康奈尔大学、日本新潟大学等亦保持着长期或短期的交流关系。
学院现有在职教师54人，其中教授29人，副教授22人，讲师3人。
至2017年秋季学期，本科生共有455人，硕士研究生355人，博士研究生189人，其中外国留学生总计323人。
招生规模特别是研究生、留学生数量呈逐年递增趋势。
