The Chinese character "fu" (meaning blessing or happiness) is a must. The character put on paper can be pasted normally or upside down, for in Chinese the "reversed fu" is homophonic with "fu comes", both being pronounced as "fudaole."
Dragon dance and Lion dance
Dragon and lion dances are common during Chinese New Year. It is believed that the loud beats of the drum and the deafening sounds of the cymbals together with the face of the dragon or lion dancing aggressively can evict bad or evil spirits. Lion dances are also popular for opening of businesses .

In recent years, the Spring Festival party /gala broadcast on China Central Television Station (CCTV) is essential entertainment for the Chinese both at home and abroad.
新年(xīnnián)起床(qǐchuáng)后(hòu)，每 个人(měigèrén)都(dōu)盛装(shèngzhuāng) 打扮(dǎban)。首先(shǒuxiān)孩子们 (háizimen)会(huì)问候(wènhòu)他们 (tāmen)的(de)父母(fùmǔ)。然后(ránhòu) 会(huì)从(cóng)父母(fùmǔ)那里(nàli)得 到(dédào)一(yī)个(gè)红包(hóngbāo)作为 (zuòwéi)新年(xīnnián)礼物(lǐwù)。

According to custom, each family will stay up late on New Year’s Eve to see the New Year in.
Hong Bao or Red Packet wish a Happy New Year
Waking up on New Year, everybody dresses up. First they extend greetings to their parents. Then each child will get money as a New Year gift, wrapped up in red paper.
Since then, every year around this time, people hung red paper and burned bamboo to protect themselves from Nian. This practice has evolved to the current celebration of Spring Festival, when people stick red posters (paper) and set off firecrackers (originally made from bamboo).
Over years, the people tried to protect themselves from Nian. One spring, Villagers came up with some ideas. They hung bright red paper on every door in the village and as soon as Nian entered the village, they threw bamboos into the fire, which gave out thousands of explosions. Nian suddenly ran away as fast as he could.
