Period Two Reading and Thinking—ComprehendingWednesday,21 June Today was my first day back in San Francisco① after camping in the Redwood Forest and visiting the wine country of Napa Valley②.I have to admit③that 1it definitely④feels good to be back in the city again. And what a city—a city that was able to rebuild itself after the earthquake that occurred⑤in 1906.There are so many beautiful old buildings—many sitting on top of big hills, offering great views of the city, the ocean, and the Golden Gate Bridge⑥.My hotel is near downtown⑦,in the Mission⑧District⑨,one of the oldest parts of the city. Many of the people living here are from Mexico⑩or Central America. This district⑪used to be a poor area of town, but is now a centre for art, music, and food.In fact,an art movement called the “Mission School”started here. It’s influenced by graffiti⑫art and comic⑬art.2I walked around looking at the street art for a few hours. It was quite modern and lively.Afterwards ⑭,I ate some delicious Mexican-Chinese noodles from a food truck.A real mix of cultures here!In the afternoon,I headed to⑮ a local museum that showed the historical⑯changes in California⑰.I learnt that America got California from Mexico in 1848.In the same year, gold was discovered near San Francisco, which started a gold rush.Over 300,000 people came from all over the world to seek⑱their fortune, and San6月21日,星期三在红杉林露营并参观了纳帕谷酒乡后,今天是我回到旧金山的第一天。

世界各地30多万人蜂拥而至,在这里谋出路,旧金山迅速成为一座大都①San Francisco/ˌsænfrən′s I skəʊ/圣弗朗西斯科(旧金山)(美国城市)②Napa Valley/ˌnæpə′væli/纳帕谷(美国)③admit/əd′m I t/v i.& v t.承认v t.准许进入(或加入)④definitely/′def I nətli/ad v.肯定;确实⑤occur/ə′kɜː(r)/v i.发生;出现⑥the Golden/′gəʊldən/ Gate Bridge金门桥⑦downtown/ˌdaʊn′taʊn/ad v. 传教(区);重要任务;使命⑨the Mission District教会区(旧金山)⑩Mexico/′meks I kəʊ/墨西哥(北美洲国家)⑪district/′d I str I kt/n.地区;区域⑫graffiti/grə′fiːti/n.[pl.]涂鸦;胡写乱画⑬comic/′kɒm I k/n. 去⑯historical/h I′stɒr I kl/adj.(有关)历史的⑰California/ˌkæl I′fɔːniə/加利福尼亚(美国州名)⑱seek/siːk/v t.& v i.(sought/sɔːt/,sought)寻找;寻求;争取;(向人)请求seek one’s fortune寻找成功致富之路;闯世界⑲earn/ɜːn/v t.& v i.挣得;赚得;赢得;博得earn a living谋生⑳immigrant/′I m Iɡrənt/n.(外来)移民;外侨○21select/s I′lekt/v t. 粤语;广东人○23china/′tʃa I nə/n.瓷;瓷器○24jazz/dʒæz/n. Read the passage quickly and fill in the following blanks with suitable words.Ⅱ.The main idea of the text is about a travel journal of the author when travelling in Francisco.
