长城的建造始于公元前７世纪的战国时期，并持续了2000多年。
它绵延6700公里，故又称作“万里长城”，是古代世界上最长的防御工事。
长城既具有优美的自然景观又具有重要的历史价值。
我们今天所见到的长城大多建于明朝时期。
经过修葺与翻新，现今最具代表性的段落如，八达岭，慕田峪，司马台，居庸关，水关，古北口等已成为世界旅游景点。
虽然今天的长城，早已失去军事价值，而以其特有的魅力，吸引着广大中外游客，成为举世闻名的旅游胜地。
