1. Be famous for… 因…而出名
例：New York is famous for its high buildings.纽约因高楼大厦而出名。

He is famous for his novels. 他因他的小说而出名。

Be famous as…作为…而出名
Hangzhou is famous as a tourist city. 作为旅游城市，杭州很出名。

Lu Xun was famous as a writer. 鲁迅是著名的作家（作为作家，鲁迅很出名）
2.Be familiar with=know sth well
sb. be familiar with sth某人对某物很熟悉
例：They are familiar with computer. 他们精通电脑。

(sth) be familiar to sb.(某物)对某人而言很熟悉
例：This subject is familiar to us. 这个课题对我们而言很熟悉（我们很
熟悉这个课题）
the number of /a number of 辨析
这两个词组不同之处，就在于其前的冠词上。

1）the number of…表示“……的数量”。

作主语的中心词时，谓语动词用单数形式，后常跟large, small等词作表语。

如：
The number of the students is very large in our school. 我们学校的学生数量非常大。

The number of the students in our school is2000.我校的学生人数是两千。

2）a number of表示“若干的；；许多的”。

起修饰作用，相当于many或a lot of，number前可以加small, large词来表示程度。

A number of+复数可数名词作主语时，其谓语动词用复数形式。

如：
A number of the students are playing football. 许多学生在踢足球。
