【点拨】faith n. [U]信任,信心,信念,信仰常用搭配:have/ lose faith in 信赖....../失去对......的信赖keep/ break faith with 对......守/ 不守信用in good faith 真诚,诚心诚意I have great faith in her. She won’t let me down.我对她很有信心,她不会让我失望的。

The public have lost faith in what the government is doing.公众对政府的所作所为失去了信心。

How can I tell them the truth without breaking faith with the company?我怎么样告诉他们真相而不失信于公司呢?The woman who sold me the car claimed she had acted in good faith.卖我车的女子声称她的行为恪守诚信。

【点拨】1. consequence n. a result or effect of something结果;后果。

相当于result。

She said exactly what she felt, without fear of the consequence.她不畏惧会产生的结果,一五一十地说出了自己的感受。

If you behave so foolishly you must be ready to take the consequences.如果你如此愚蠢地做事情的话,你就准备承受后果吧。

常用搭配:as a consequence 因此,所以He has lived in France; as a consequence he speaks French fluently.他一直住在法国,所以他的法语非常流利。

2. consequent adj. happening as a result of something随之发生的;由此引起的The rise in prices is consequent upon the failure of the crops.由于庄稼欠收,所以价格就随之上涨了。

3. consequently adv.所以,结果They’ve increased the number of staff and consequently the service is better.他们增加了职员的数量,所以服务就变好了。

aim【原句回放】During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. 在中世纪,画家的主要任务是把宗教的主题表现出来。

【点拨】aim v. 瞄准;目的,旨在常用搭配:aim to do... 以做......为目标aim at sth./ doing sth. 瞄准,以......为目标The project aims to provide an outlet for children’s creativity.此项目旨在为孩子们的创造力提供表现的地方。

He was aiming at the tree but he missed. 他瞄准那棵树,但是没有射中。

be aimed at 目的在于;针对注意:这个短语中的be aimed不强调被动,而表示一种状态,类似动词如:determine,prepare,marry等。

如:I determine to go. 我下决心要去。

也可以说:I am determined to go. 我决定去。

其中动词强调的是动作,而过去分词强调的是状态。

The regulations are aimed at the prevention of accidents at work.这些规则的制定目的在于预防在工作中出现事故。

The book is aimed at people with no specialized knowledge.这本书主要针对于那些没有专业知识的人。

【拓展】aim n.My main aim on this course is to gain confidence.我选这门课的目的主要是增强信心。

convince【原句回放】When people first saw his paintings they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. 当人们第一次看到他的画时,他们确信是透过墙上的一个洞来观看真实的场景。

【点拨】convince vt.1. to make someone believe that something is true. 使确信;使信服He failed to convince the jury of his innocence. (注意介词of)他没有能够使陪审团信服他的无辜。

Maria had convinced herself that he didn’t love her.玛丽亚已经使自己相信他不爱她。

2. to persuade someone to do something说服They tried to convince him to buy a cheaper car. 他们设法说服他买辆便宜的车。

注意:如果表示“使某人信服某事”或“使某人相信某事是真的”,一般用convince;而表示“说服某人做某事时,convince可以与persuade互换。

【拓展】convincing adj. 确信的,坚信的attempt【原句回放】... that is, the painter does not attempt to paint objects as we see them with our eyes, ... ...... 也就是说,画家并不想把物体画得像我们亲眼所见的那样......【点拨】attempt 是“try”的高级词汇。

v.尝试,企图1. Few people knew that she had once attempted suicide.很少有人知道她曾经试图自杀。

2. The book attempts to explain (=try explaining) the origins of the war.这本书尝试着解释这场战争的源由。

n.努力,尝试(尤指较难的事)1. The government has made no attempt to avoid the crisis. (make no attempt to do)这个政府还没有做出避免危机的尝试。

2. It’s his fourth attempt at flying a balloon around the world.(attempt at doing/to dosth.)这是他第四次尝试乘气球环游世界。

3. His attempt at English composition was poor. 他没有努力让他的作文变好。

adopt【原句回放】People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. 人们开始更少地关注宗教主题,而对生活采取了更加人性化的态度。

【点拨】adopt vt. 采用(方法),采取(某态度),采纳(建议、改革等);收养注意其形近词adapt(适应,改编)。

I adopted their method of making the machine. 我采用了他们的机器制造方法。

The board adopted the proposal after much debate.进行了很多讨论后,理事会采纳了这个提议。

As they had no children of their own, they adopted an orphan.因为他们没有自己的孩子,就领养了一个孤儿。

【拓展】adoption n.采用,领养We are talking about the adoption of a new plan for the picnic.我们正在谈论采用一个新的野餐计划。

■possess【原句回放】Rich people wanted to possess their own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palace and great houses. 富人们想拥有自己的画,这样就可以装饰他们的高级宫殿和豪宅。

【点拨】possess vt. 拥有;占有(不能用于进行时)The gallery possesses some interesting pictures which are valuable.这个画廊拥有一些有趣的名画。

He does possess a sense of humour. 他真的有些幽默感。
