By contrast, the number divorces increased to the highest point t at nearly 1.5 million by 1980, before decreasing back to 1 million at the end of the period.
The second chart compares figures for the marital status of American adults in 1970 and 2000.Proportion of never married adult in 1970 was about 13%, in comparison with 20% in 2000. Around 70% of American adults were married in 1970, 10% higher than that in 2000. it is note worthy that American had the almost same percentage of widowed people in two years, and the divorce rate rose by about 10% at the same time.
overall, marriage rate in the USA remained higher than that of divorce. However, the gap narrowed gradually, and the proportion of single adults was higher in 2000.。
