Quality control is one of the important requirements for satisfactory curative effect of CMM. The scientific research groups, led by Prof. XU Guojun of our university and all, have done systematic studies on 105 different medicinal herbs. eg. Radix Codonopsis, Radix Ophiopogonis, Rhizoma Coptidis, tec., and proposed the criteria and methods of differentiating the Chinese medicinal herbs. Up to now, thousands of species of medicinal plants have been screened, and some were substantiated to possess therapeutical efficacy on modern scientific basis. As is well known, artemisin is an extract from the Chinese herb Artemisia annua L. The Chinese scientists made a breakthrough in the history of treating malaria with quinine and chloroquine exclusively.
Aremisnin and its derivatives ( artesunate and artemether) showed marked effect in the treatment of chloroquine resistant malaria, pernicious malaria and cerebral malaria.

二、中药资源及其研究成果/ Chinese Medicinal Plant resources and achievement of its scientific research
The medicinal plant resources are very abundant in China. After the foundation of the People’s Republic of China, several large scale of surveys and special projects on the medicinal plant resources have been conducted in our country. New information concerning the Chinese medicinal resources, scientific identification, chemical constituents, pharmacological experiments and clinical applications was acquired continually. On the basis of those projects, many new works, monographs and manuals about Chinese herbal drugs were published, such as Compilation of Chinese Herbal Drugs, An Encyclopedia of Chinese Materia Medica, Chinese National Minorities Medicines, A color Pictorial Book of Herbs, The Chinese Materia Medica, A New Chinese Herbal, etc.
