Halloween is the night of October 31st, the evening of All Saints’Day. In the past people believed that on the night of Halloween the dead would rise from their graves to revisit their homes. The people lit fires to frighten away evil spirits and help the ghosts find their way home. Today most people do not believe this, but some of the customs remain.

What we did at the party
We also played a game at the party. It’s biting the apple. Our teacher prepared a big basin full of water, and put many clean apples in the basin. We need to take the apples out of the basin without using you hands. The only thing we could use was our mouth. We had to push the apples to the bottom of the basin and we could bite it after all. Though I was all wet, I got two apples out and felt so happy.

The game we played
It was a very nice party, I had a lot of fun there. I will never forget the experience, because I not only enjoyed myself by playing games, but also learned a lot about western festivals.
How to make a pumpkin light
At the party, we all dressed up with sort of curtains or things all around us and some of kids wore horrible-looking masks. We went upstairs and downstairs knocking on every office’s door, and said, “Trick or treat?” It means “give us something or we’ll play a trick on you.” All the teachers chose treat and gave us lots of candies and fruits, because they were afraid of being tricked.
Last year our school held a Halloween party for us. It was fantastic. That was my first experience. When we got into the classroom, we saw many black and red spiders on the windows and many bats hanging above our heads. We heard the music which was very scared. And even a skeleton and a ghost were hanging on the door. You can see pumpkins in almost every classroom. Everywhere in the classroom was frightening.

At the party, our teacher taught us how to make a pumpkin light. We spent a long time cutting the lid off it, taking out the pulp, that’s the inside of it. Then we cut holes in the pumpkin, two eyes, a funny nose and a big mouth with a grin. And then we put a candle inside it,and place that on the window. The teacher told us the pumpkin light was called “Jack-o-lantern”.
