We received a series of school education as well as non-school education during the course of growing up. And we become physically and mentally mature at some time when we can start to live independently in society, which owes to learning and shows its irreplaceable significance. Some people, however, argue that it is not necessary for us to continue learning after we start our career. Maybe this was true if time rolls back to hundreds of years ago when the accumulation of knowledge of human beings was at a low level. On the contrary, we would be stunned looking at the pace of our society’s development. Knowledge and information update themselves with periods which become shorter and shorter. It is not unimaginable anymore that the world changes a lot during the interval of closing and opening your eyes.We cannot propose a life without learning in such a fast-paced society, for we probably would become outdated if we stop learning after we graduate. It is only through the life-long learning that we can catch up with the changing society.Script for Listening ComprehensionPart I Listening Comprehension (20 %)Section ADirections:You will hear four conversations between two speakers. To avoid the pain of a drilling that may last perhaps a minute ortwo, we demand the needle—a shot of novocaine—that deadens the nerves around the tooth. Now it’s true that the human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us adjust to the world. Without our nerves—and our brain, which is a bundle of nerves—we wouldn’t know what’s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture is based on the human body being open to pain. But there is a way to handle pain. Look at the Indian fakir who sits on a bed of nails. Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain. The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude toward it. If the dentist says, “This will hurt a little,” it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation, we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.Questions 5 to 7 are based on the passage you have just heard.5. What is the passage mainly about?6. What is TRUE about the Indian fakir?7. What is the most important thing to handle painPassage TwoThere are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The one most widely accepted today is based on the assumption that drama evolved from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world ---- even the seasonal changes ---- as unpredictable, and they sought through various means to control these unknown and fearful powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained or veiled the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art and drama. Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances and when the entire community did not participate, a clear division was usually made between the “acting area” and the “auditorium”. In addition, there were performers, and, since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task. Wearing masks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, orsupernatural beings, and mimed the desired effect ---- success in hunt or battle, the coming rain, the revival of the Sun ---- as an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities.Another theory traces the theater’s origin from the human interest in storytelling. According to these ties, tales (about the hunt, war, or other feats) are gradually elaborated, at first through the use of impersonation, action, and dialogue by a narrator and then through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person. A closely related theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds. Questions 8 to 10 are based on the passage you have just heard.8. Where did drama begin according to many theories?9. What is the route of drama’s evolution according to another theory10. Why is drama related to dances?Section CDirections: You are going to hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. Thenlisten again and fill in the blanks with what you have heard. When thepassage is read for the third time, check what you have written.
