hink,whendidyoulasttakeanytimetodonothing?just 10minutes,undisturbed?andwhenisaynothing,idome annothing.sothatsnoemailing,texting,nointernet ,notv,nochatting,noeating,noreading,notevensit tingtherereminiscingaboutthepastorplanningfort hefuture.simplydoingnothing.iseealotofveryblan kfaces.(laughter)mythinkingis,youprobablyhavet ogoalongwayback.andthisisanextraordinarything,right?weretalkingaboutourmind.themind,ourmostvaluableandprecio usresource,throughwhichweexperienceeverysingle momentofourlife,themindthatwerelyupontobehappy ,content,emotionallystableasindividuals,andatt hesametimetobekindandthoughtfulandconsideratei nourrelationshipswithothers.thisisthesamemindt hatwedependupontobefocused,creative,spontaneou s,andtoperformatourverybestineverythingthatwed o.andyet,wedonttakeanytimeouttolookafterit.inf act,wespendmoretimelookingafterourcars,ourclot hesandourhairthanwe—okay,maybenotourhair,butyouseewhereimgoing.theresult,ofcourse,isthatwegetstressed.youknow ,themindwhizzesawaylikeawashingmachinegoingrou ndandround,lotsofdifficult,confusingemotions,a ndwedontreallyknowhowtodealwiththat,andthesadf actisthatwearesodistractedthatwerenolongerpres entintheworldinwhichwelive.wemissoutonthething sthataremostimportanttous,andthecrazythingisth ateverybodyjustassumes,well,thatsthewaylifeis,sowevejustkindofgottogetonwithit.thatsreallyno thowithastobe.soiwasabout11wheniwentalongtomyfirstmeditation class.andtrustme,ithadallthestereotypesthatyou canimagine,thesittingcross-leggedonthefloor,th eincense,theherbaltea,thevegetarians,thewholed eal,butmymomwasgoingandiwasintrigued,soiwental ongwithher.idalsoseenafewkungfumovies,andsecre tlyikindofthoughtimightbeabletolearnhowtofly,b utiwasveryyoungatthetime.nowasiwasthere,iguess ,likealotofpeople,iassumedthatitwasjustanaspir inforthemind.yougetstressed,youdosomemeditatio n.ihadntreallythoughtthatitcouldbesortofpreven tativeinnature,untiliwasabout20,whenanumberoft hingshappenedinmylifeinquitequicksuccession,re allyseriousthingswhichjustflippedmylifeupsided ownandallofasuddeniwasinundatedwiththoughts,in undatedwithdifficultemotionsthatididntknowhowt ocopewith.everytimeisortofpushedonedown,anothe ronewouldjustsortofpopbackupagain.itwasareally verystressfultime.iguesswealldealwithstressindifferentways.somep eoplewillburythemselvesinwork,gratefulforthedi straction.otherswillturntotheirfriends,theirfa mily,lookingforsupport.somepeoplehitthebottle, starttakingmedication.myownwayofdealingwithitw astobecomeamonk.soiquitmydegree,iheadedofftoth ehimalayas,ibecameamonk,andistartedstudyingmed itation.peopleoftenaskmewhatilearnedfromthattime.well, obviouslyitchangedthings.letsfaceit,becomingac elibatemonkisgoingtochangeanumberofthings.buti twasmorethanthat.ittaughtme--itgavemeagreatera ppreciation,anunderstandingforthepresentmoment .bythatimeannotbeinglostinthought,notbeingdist racted,notbeingoverwhelmedbydifficultemotions, butinsteadlearninghowtobeinthehereandnow,howto bemindful,howtobepresent.ithinkthepresentmomentissounderrated.itsoundssoordinary,andyetwespendsolittletimeinthepresen tmomentthatitsanythingbutordinary.therewasares earchpaperthatcameoutofharvard,justrecently,th atsaidonaverageourmindsarelostinthoughtalmost4 7percentofthetime.forty-sevenpercent.atthesame time,thissortofconstantmind-wanderingisalsoadi rectcauseofunhappiness.nowwerenothereforthatlo nganyway,buttospendalmosthalfofourlifelostinth oughtandpotentiallyquiteunhappy,dunno,itjustki ndofseemstragic,actually,especiallywhentheress omethingwecandoaboutit,whentheresapositive,pra ctical,achievable,scientificallyproventechniqu ewhichallowsourmindtobemorehealthy,tobemoremin dfulandlessdistracted.andthebeautyofitisthatev enthoughitneedonlytakeabout10minutesaday,itimp actsourentirelife.butweneedtoknowhowtodoit.wen eedanexercise.weneedaframeworktolearnhowtobemo remindful.thatsessentiallywhatmeditationis.its familiarizingourselveswiththepresentmoment.but wealsoneedtoknowhowtoapproachitintherightwayto getthebestfromit.andthatswhatthesearefor,incas eyouvebeenwondering,becausemostpeopleassumethatmeditationisallaboutstoppingthoughts,gettingr idofemotions,somehowcontrollingthemind,butactu allyitsquitedifferentfromthat.itsmoreaboutstep pingback,seeingthethoughtclearly,witnessingitc omingandgoing,emotionscomingandgoingwithoutjud gment,butwitharelaxed,focusedmind.soforexample,rightnow,ififocustoomuchontheball s,thentheresnowaythaticanrelaxandtalktoyouatth esametime.equally,ifirelaxtoomuchtalkingtoyou, thentheresnowayicanfocusontheballs.imgoingtodr opthem.nowinlife,andinmeditation,therellbetime swhenthefocusbecomesalittlebittoointense,andli festartstofeelabitlikethis.itsaveryuncomfortab lewaytolivelife,whenyougetthistightandstressed .atothertimes,wemighttakeourfootoffthegasalitt lebittoomuch,andthingsjustbecomeasortoflittleb itlikethis.ofcourseinmeditation—(snores)—weregoingtoendupfallingasleep.sowerelookingfor abalance,afocusedrelaxationwherewecanallowthou ghtstocomeandgowithoutalltheusualinvolvement.now,whatusuallyhappenswhenwerelearningtobemind fulisthatwegetdistractedbyathought.letssaythis isananxiousthought.soeverythingsgoingfine,andt henweseetheanxiousthought,anditslike,"oh,didnt realizeiwasworriedaboutthat."yougobacktoit,rep eatit."oh,iamworried.oh,ireallyamworried.wow,t heressomuchanxiety."andbeforeweknowit,right,we reanxiousaboutfeelinganxious.youknow,thisiscra zy.wedothisallthetime,evenonaneverydaylevel.if youthinkaboutthelasttime,idunno,youhadawobblyt ooth.youknowitswobbly,andyouknowthatithurts.bu twhatdoyoudoevery20,30seconds?(mumbling)itdoes hurt.andwereinforcethestoryline,right?andwejus tkeeptellingourselves,andwedoitallthetime.andi tsonlyinlearningtowatchthemindinthiswaythatwec anstarttoletgoofthosestorylinesandpatternsofmi nd.butwhenyousitdownandyouwatchthemindinthiswa y,youmightseemanydifferentpatterns.youmightfin damindthatsreallyrestlessand--thewholetime.don tbesurprisedifyoufeelabitagitatedinyourbodywhe nyousitdowntodonothingandyourmindfeelslikethat.youmightfindamindthatsverydullandboring,andit sjust,almostmechanical,itjustseemsitsasifyoure gettingup,goingtowork,eat,sleep,getup,work.ori tmightjustbethatonelittlenaggingthoughtthatjus tgoesroundandroundandroundyourmind.well,whatev eritis,meditationofferstheopportunity,thepoten tialtostepbackandtogetadifferentperspective,to seethatthingsarentalwaysastheyappear.wecantcha ngeeverylittlethingthathappenstousinlife,butwe canchangethewaythatweexperienceit.thatsthepote ntialofmeditation,ofmindfulness.youdonthavetob urnanyincense,andyoudefinitelydonthavetositont hefloor.allyouneedtodoistotake10minutesoutaday tostepback,tofamiliarizeyourselfwiththepresent
