A team of researchers working together in the laboratory would submit the results of their research to a journal. A journal editor would then remove the authors’ names and affiliations from the paper and send it to their peers for review. Depending on the comments received, the editor would accept the paper for publication or decline it. Copyright rested with the journal publisher, and researchers seeking knowledge of the results would have to subscribe to the journal. No longer. The Internet –and pressure from funding agencies, who are questioning why commercial publishers are making money from government-funded research by restricting access to it – is making access to scientific results a reality. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has just issued a report describing the far-reaching consequences of this. The report, by John Houghton of Victoria University in Australia and Graham Vickery of the OECD, makes heavy reading for publishers who have, so far, made handsome profits. But it goes further than that. It signals a change in what has, until now, been a key element of scientific endeavor. The value of knowledge and the return on the public investment in research depends, in part, upon wide distribution and ready access. It is big business. In America, the core scientificpublishing market is estimated at between $7 billion and $11 billion. The International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers says that there are more than 2,000 publishers worldwide specializing in these subjects. They publish more than 1.2 million articles each year in some 16,000 journals. This is now changing. According to the OECD report, some 75% of scholarly journals are now online. Entirely new business models are emerging; three main ones were identified by the report’s authors. There is the so-called big deal, where institutional subscribers pay for access to a collection of online journal titles through site-licensing agreements. There is open-access publishing, typically supported by asking the author (or his employer) to pay for the paper to be published. Finally, there are open-access archives, where organizations such as universities or international laboratories support institutional repositories. Other models exist that are hybrids of these three, such as delayed open-access, where journals allow only subscribers to read a paper for the first six months, before making it freely available to everyone who wishes to see it. All this could change the traditional form of the peer-review process, at least for the publication of papers.1. In the first paragraph, the author discusses[A]the background information of journal editing.[B]the publication routine of laboratory reports.[C]the relations of authors with journal publishers.[D]the traditional process of journal publication.2. Which of the following is true of the OECD report?[A]It criticizes government-funded research.[B]It introduces an effective means of publication.[C]It upsets profit-making journal publishers.[D]It benefits scientific research considerably.2. 写作的基本素质1) Directions:Write an essay of 160–200 words based on the following drawing. 【高分范文】As (it) is vividly revealed in the drawing above, two disabled people, who have lost one leg, support each other, desert their walking sticks, and experience the ups and downs of the world together. What is indicated in the drawing reflects a fact and is most thought-provoking.The implied meaning of the drawing can be interpreted in terms of mutual help, cooperation and teamwork. To begin with, mutual help is badly needed in our social life. As social beings, people depend on each other in our life, work and study. As an average individual, each person has both his shortcoming and merits. Only by way of mutual assistance can we overcome our own shortcomings and realize our self-value and dream. What’s more, cooperation and teamwork are essential in our social work and the building-up of our harmonious society. With the rapid development of science and economy, people are increasingly feeling the power of mutual help and cooperation. The construction of a bridge, a building, a dam, a spacecraft and other projects can not be achieved without the joint efforts and individual sacrifice. In short, we need to realize that neither our society nor our personal life can be separated from mutual assistance, cooperation and teamwork. In my view, some necessary measures should be taken to make people realize ―United, we stand, divided, we fall.‖ First of all, an education campaign should be launched to educate people on the importance of mutual help and cooperation. In addition, more relavant activities should be created for young people to cultivate the sense of mutual help, cooperation and teamwork. Only in these ways can we build up a harmonious society.(276 words) 2008年宫东风考研英语大作文写作预测第15篇参考范文As is vividly betrayed in the photo above, four people are making joint efforts in a boat race. All of them cooperate and spare no effort to win success. What is indicated in the picture above reflects a common sense and is most thought-provoking.The implied meaning of the picture above can be interpreted in terms of cooperation and teamwork. To begin with, the sense of cooperation must be cultivated among us. As social beings, people depend on each other in our daily life, work and study. The realization of self-value is closely related to unity and cooperation. It is well-known that ―United we stand, divided we fall‖. Wh at’s more, the spirit of cooperation and teamwork is badly needed in the building-up of a harmonious society. As we know, the social development is based on the contribution and cooperation of every citizen. The spirit of cooperation and teamwork benefits both our social harmony and each individual. And sincere cooperation will surely bring us the prosperity of a nation. In short, it is essential for us to be aware of the importance of cooperation and teamwork.Take Shenzhou and Chang’e space-crafts for example. Both of the projects are demanding tasks. The research and experiment work is permeated with the spirit of cooperation and sacrifice. Without such cooperation and sacrifice, the success of the two space-crafts would not be achieved. In sum, the sense of cooperation and teamwork should take roots in our minds.(241 words)四、考研是一场计划战1.
