Pride and Prejudice (Chapter One) “I see no occasion for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which perhaps will be still better;for, as you are as handsome as any of them,Mr.Bingly might like you the best of the party.”
The author wrote down this paragraph with sarcastic humour, called irony technique. This paragraph also embodies the idea of patriarchy and Feminism. As a husband, Mr.Bennet doesn’t give any advice to his wife, on the contrary, treat her with mock; As a father, he isn’t responsible for his daughter. He is a failure of the two roles that he should play at his time.
In the society of patriarchy at that time, women were supposed to obey orders. Where there is oppression, there is revolt. Under the patriarchal society system, there also developed the idea of Feminism. The author herself hates this system but she wrote this paragraph without any clear statement and just leave room for the readers to weigh and consider. She doesn’t agree with the social convention. As a matter of fact, the author herself has progressive idea,in her stand, the social status of male and female should be equal while most of the women at that time were not aware of this idea. All she wants to express,I think, is to arouse women’s awareness of Feminism. Famele is not inferior to male, they could finish
something better than male, they also have some advantages over male.In a word, man and women should be treated equally so that society can be more harmonious and progress faster.。
