Ⅴ. Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: This part is to test your reading ability. There are 3 tasks for you to fulfill. You should read the reading materials carefully and do the tasks as you are instructed. Task 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Listening to a radio program in a foreign language is difficult for many of us. We may have studied the language for years, be able to read and even speak and write in the language. However, listening to a foreign language calls for different skills. Some people have a natural ability to learn languages quickly because they know how to "listen". Others have to study for a long time. Everyone, however, can improve his or her listening skills with practice. We are good listeners in our own language because we have had years of practice. We understand the grammar and the words. We also understand the style of our own language. We know what to expect in almost any situation because we have heard similar conversations many times before. As a result, we can understand what is being talked about, even if we are not listening carefully. Unfortunately, this is not true with a foreign language. We have to listen really hard and we must try not to let the style of our own language affect our learning of the foreign language.Listening to a radio program in a foreign language is easier if we know something about the subject already. Evening programs are usually quite long and detailed. Morning programs, however, usually have many short items of news or information. These are good to listen to because we often do not have the time or energy to listen to those in the evening. The name of the program will usually tell us what the subject is (e.g. A Week in Politics). But sometimes, it may not! In this case, you can try guessing what the program will be about.Another suggestion is to try listening to the news headlines in a foreign language every day, and then compare them with the Chinese ones. You could also listen to the weather reports, as they are usually short and sweet. However, be prepared to listen carefully because the presenters often speak very quickly. Last but not least, try to listen to a foreign radio program every day — a little bit of listening practice every day is better than a lot, all in one go!1. According to the text, everyone can make his or her listening skills better with ________.A). natural abilityB). radioC). suggestionD). practice2 . We are good listeners in our own language because ________.A). we have had natural abilityB). we have used our own language for many yearsC). we have learned the skills from our parentsD). we like our own language3. "Unfortunately, this is not true with a foreign language." (Para. 2) In this sentence,"unfortunately" means " ________ ".A). it's a bad thing thatB). it's a lucky thing thatC). I'm glad to say thatD). I'm lucky to say that4. Listening to a radio program in a foreign language is easier if we ________.A). have something to eat before listening to itB). keep the style of our own languageC). listen really hardD). have some ideas about the subject already5. "Last but not least, try to listen to a foreign radio program every day — a little bit of listening practice every day is better than a lot, all in one go!" In this sentence, "Last but not least" means " ________ ".A). It's the last point, but it's not the least important oneB). In the end, it's the most important pointC). It's over, but not yetD). It will go on for a long timeTask 2 Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:Most people love Michael Jordan. He’s the NBA’s No. 1 player who can run fast, jump high and shoot well. All these things are true, but there are other truths about Michael that are not so easily seen: his understanding of teamwork, his competitive spirit and his love for the game. It is these truths that form the deepest connection between Michael and me.After coaching him for eight seasons, I stil l wonder at Michael’s love for the game that moves us, even in practice games. I mean, he never takes a day off. One thing about Michael is that he takes nothing about his game for granted. When he first came to the NBA back in 1984, his outside shooting was not perfect, and he began to practice shooting hundreds of shots each day. In the end, he became a real three-point shooter. Playing outstanding defense didn’t come straight to him, either. He had to study his opponents, learn their usual moves and then try hard to learn the skills necessary to stop them. He worked extremely hard to perfect his footwork and his balance.Today, so many young people come to the game with the thought that talent is all they need for success. Michael thinks the other way. He knows his weaknesses, and for me, one of the signs of Michael's greatness is that he has turned his weaknesses into strengths.Another of the qualities I respect most about Michael is his performance on the court. Whilst he is very competitive, he always respects the other players, whether they are on his team or on the other side. Often, he gives a hand to an opponent who falls down. He is definitely not the type of player who would try to build himself up by tearing someone else down. This is an act of leadership. Through his outstanding performance on the court, he has won love and respect from both his teammates and opponents.Every season, Michael makes himself available to groups of children with serious diseases. He puts them at ease, lets them have a laugh, and makes it possible for them to enjoy basketball. When Michael retires, I only hope that young players like Grant Hill and Kobe Bryant will be influenced by his performance and by his sense of fair play. I hope that people will remember him for much more than just his championship rings. Being Michael’s coach has been a great joy. But more importantly, I consider Michael to be a friend.6.The text is written by ____.A). a basketball player B). a basketball coachC). a basketball fan D). a sports news reporter7. What is true about Michael Jordan? _____A). He can’t jump high. B). He can’t run fast.C). He can shoot well. D). He can take a day off.8. Which of the following is NOT true?_____A). The coach regarded Michael Jordan as a friend.B). Many children with serious diseases can get a chance to meet Michael Jordan.C). Michael Jordan has influenced many other basketball players through his love for the game.D). Michael Jordan doesn't think talent is everything a person needs for success in playing basketball.Task 3 Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:As prices and building costs keep risi ng, the “do-it-yourself” (DIY) trend (趋势) in the U.S. continues to grow.“We needed furniture(家具) for our living room.” Says John Ross, “and we just didn’t have enough money to buy it. So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs.” John got married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for $ 280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house.Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $ 420. “I was deeply upset about it. Now I have finished a car repair course, I sh ould be able to fix the car by myself.”John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything they can to save money so they can fight the high cost of living. If you want to become a “do-it-yourself”, you can go to DIY cla sses.
