This novel was written by Jack London (1876-1916). He was born in a bankrupt farm family. He joined the team which headed for the gold in the cold north. Owing to these experiences, his stories demonstrate a strange but vast world where people struggle with nature. This novel is set in that amazing world too; it also sticks to the notion “fight to survive”. This novel is the great one in the great one in the novels about animals. The main character of this novel is a gentle California dog. This novel tells us how this gentle dog fights for life in the cold north and the unfriendly dogs. First, Buck was civilized and led a peaceful life. Unfortunately, he was sold to the chill world. Gradually he was adapted to this kind of life. He learned quickly. He knew that there was only the power that can bring him the happiness and safety. However his last master treated him very well and they became good friends finally. During his whole process of suffering and happiness, he played a role of indomitable soldier. He is also a runner who chased after his wildness and freedom. Sometimes he was not just a dog, he seemed to live like a man, a brave man.
Another character who impressed me a lot is Buck’s last master. It was he who saved Buck’s life. He was not only a dog
lover but also a brave and venturous man. He was kindhearted, straightforward and simple. He seemed to be the only human in that crazy world. He and Buck are the same and they are different from the characters in the novel. It can be said that he helped the Buck answer the call of the wild.
Moreover, the novel uses the third person. It is better for the author to tell us the story. When I read the novel, I seemed to stand beside the Buck, watch him suffer the pain, struggle for life, respond the call of the wild. Obviously, this novel applies with the personification, which makes novel into a fiction one. The language in this novel is refined. Several scenes such as the dog’s struggles are very vivid. The author also utilized a lot of details, for example, the master let Buck wear his old shoes. Besides the characters and the language, the theme are also impressed me and drove me to think about the nature, the people and the life. Nature is the most justice one in the world. When we meet some disasters, we must take heart of grace and make great efforts to improve them. We should treat nature as our teacher, our parents and our friend. Everything in the world is equal. We, human being, are not the controller but the keeper. We may come back to nature, listen to the wild call and find our nature.。
