C. Reading Comprehension
Reality TV show is a genre of television programming that documents real-life situations and often features previously unknown people as the cast of characters. The genre usually
highlights personal drama and conflict to a much greater extent than other television shows or documentaries. The genre has various standard themes such as getting cast members to
express their thoughts, which is often used as the show’s narration. In competition-based reality shows, where cast members try to kick others off the show, there are usually a panel of judges and/or some voting system.
According to Wikipedia, reality television shows began in the early to mid-1990s with The Real World. It then became a social phenomenon in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the global success of the series Survivor and Big Brother. These shows and a number of others became global franchises, giving rise to local versions in dozens of countries. Reality
television as a whole has become a permanent part of television programming. In the United States, various channels have set up themselves to focus on reality TV. Most notably, MTV, which began in the 1980s as a music video channel, changed to a nearly all-reality format beginning in the early 2000s.
