故事源于古代爱尔兰。一个名叫 JACK 的人，是个醉 汉且爱恶作剧。一天 JACK 把恶魔骗上了树，随即在树桩 上刻了个十字，恐吓恶魔令他不敢下来，然后 JACK 就与 恶魔约法三章，让恶魔答应施法让 JACK 永远不会犯罪为 条件让他下树。 JACK 死后，其灵魂却既不能上天又不能 下地狱，于是他的亡灵只好靠一根小蜡烛照着指引他在天 地之间倘佯。 在古老的爱尔兰传说里，这根小蜡烛是在一 根挖空的萝卜里放着，称作“JACK LANTERNS”，据说爱 尔兰人到了美国不久，即发现南瓜不论从来源和雕刻来说 都比萝卜胜一筹，于是南瓜就成了万圣节的宠物，被称作 Jack-O-Lantern，也叫做杰克灯。

古时候人们认为恶灵在每年 10月31日的夜晚重返人间。为了驱 逐恶灵，他们会将房子里的炉火和 烛台熄灭，将房子弄得很荒凉，好 像没人居住一样，这样恶灵就不会 进屋去。他们也会故意穿得很邋遢， 看起来很丑，这样恶灵就不愿意接 近他们了。Halloween也被称作万圣 节之夜，它的主题是鬼怪、吓人， 以及与死亡、魔法、魔怪有关的事 物，如鬼魂、巫婆、蝙蝠、黑猫、 猫头鹰、小妖精、僵尸、骷髅、南 瓜头和恶魔、南瓜灯等。

How to make a jack-o-lantern?
Step One: Cut the top off, Scoop out the seeds and flesh Step Two: Sketch the face onto your pumpkin. Step Three : Carefully cut out the features. Step Four : Gently scrape away the flesh on the inside of the face until it is only 1cm thick. Step Five : Using the knife, mark a circle the size of your candle or tea-light in the centre of the base. Step Six : Place your candle in the hollow, light it and replace the lid of your jack-o'-lantern.
