C. Reading Comprehension
Directions: Read the following excerpt from All at Sea: Endangered Marine Life and answer the questions that follow.
Manatees
Commonly known as sea cows, these strange-looking animals are actually more closely
related to elephants. Around the world, the various species of manatees are in trouble, but the Florida manatee – a subspecies of the West Indian manatee – is seriously endangered, with an estimated population of fewer than 3,000 mature individuals remaining. Studies indicate that this figure will drop by up to 20 percent over the next 40 years and that the creature could be facing extinction within a century. The sad part is that these gentle giants have few predators as they have evolved in parts of the ocean where the only animals capable of hunting them (orcas and sharks) are not often present. Instead, the vast majority of these mammals are killed by injuries sustained when they are hit by boats. Polluted waters are also considered to be a serious problem.
17. According to the excerpt, how many manatees will be left in the wild 40 years from now?
a. 3,400
b. 3,000
c. 2,400
