Makoto Shinkai had expressed that, unlike his past works, there would be no fantasy or science ficti on elements in this film. Instead, the feature film would attempt to present the real world from a diff erent perspective. Makoto's film gives a realistic view of the struggles many face against: time, spac e, people, and love.

Loneliness is the central element of the film, according to Shinkai. In an interview, he said he created the film with the hope of cheering up people who feel lonely or incomplete in their social relations. However, he made a point that “this movie doe sn't treat loneliness as something that must be fixed.”

Plot:
The movie is a collection of three stories; the first e pisode, Cherry Blossom（樱花抄）, shows the day of their reunion. The next episode, Cosmonaut（宇 航员）, follows the story about Takaki after the reu nion takes place from the view point of another pers on. The last episode, 5 cm per second（秒速五厘 米）, clips out the movements of their thoughts.

Plot:
The film focuses on Takao Akizuki, an as piring 15-year-old shoemaker, and Yukari Yukino, a mysterious 27-year-old woman he keeps meeting at Shinjuku Gyoen Nati onal Garden on rainy mornings.
