Christmas
• In English, the word for ‘Christmas’ is made from two parts:
CHRIST (from Greek 希腊语) = Jesus Christ
MAS (from Latin 拉丁文) = to send
• Christmas is the celebration of a holy birth or birthday, the sending of God’s Son Jesus to earth.
• The first people to be told about Jesus’ birth were shepherds (牧羊人). Angels (天使) came to them while they were watching their sheep and announced the good news. Shepherds were the first visitors to see the baby Jesus.
• There are some Christmas traditions that are common around the world, and there are other customs that are special to each country. Some are religious 宗教的 and come from the story of the first Christmas told in the Bible 圣经. Others are not religious.
• In some cities there are contests to see who can put up the most and most beautiful display of lights around their house. People often drive around the city during the Christmas season to look at the lights and to sing Christmas carols.
