III、Principles or Criteria of Translation
The so-called Principles or Criteria of Translation are actually the two sides of the same thing. The former lays emphasis on the translator, who should follow them while translating; while the later on the reader or the critic, who may use the criteria to evaluate translation works.

东汉 唐宋的佛经翻译 三大名家：鸠摩罗什、真谛、玄奘 明朝万历年至清朝的“新学”时期
翻译介绍西方政治、经济、科技和文学著作的热潮
代表：徐光启、严复、林舒（林琴南）等。 五四运动以后 马克思著作和文学作品的翻译 代表：鲁迅、瞿秋白、茅盾、郭沫若、朱生豪、林语堂等。 1949年以后 “黄金时期” 代表：傅雷、杨宪益等。

b) Translation is the replacement of textual material in one language (SL: source language) by equivalent textual material in another language. (TL: target language) (By Huang Long 黄龙from the aspect of comparative linguistics)
第一遍： 浅尝，把握全文大意；（对以疑难词句按层次做圈点）
第二遍： 细嚼，既要咬文嚼字，又要细心揣摩，避免望文生义；（逐词逐句逐段地答疑解惑）
第三遍： 通吃，将全文精神融会于心，既要通读全文，又要落实词义、句义和段义。
理解过程要做到逢山开路，遇水架桥。

根据文本类型确定标准，不同的文本对译文有不同的要求。 例如： 照相机说明书： 文字特点－－简洁明了。 目的－－让读者了解照相机的结构的操作方法。 文学作品： 文字特点－－充满了美学色彩，在音韵、选词、造句等方面极其讲究。 广告： 文字特点－－ “劝说性”文体，简明易懂并具“鼓动性”。 目的－－引导读者去做某件事。
