as 比 since 语气更弱,译作“既然,由于”在含 since, as 的句子里,全句重点放在主句的内容上,因为其理由或原因在说话人看来已很明显,或为听话所熟悉"which was 300 miles away"是一个定语从句,修饰southpole,意思是位于300英里之外的南极。
