作为一个统治者，他是专横暴虐、刚愎自用，虚荣心强。

李尔王却要女儿们在即将分财产之前表达爱意，并且根据语言的表达来“Which of you shall we say doth love us most?That we our largest bounty may extend.Where nature doth with merit challenge”。
首先，子女们在分财产之前表达爱意，这种行为本来就有虚伪做作的嫌疑，李尔王却不在意，并且主动要求女儿们在物质利益面前表达她们对自己感情。
其次，全剧葛罗斯特开场便说：“因为他分配得那么平均，无论他们怎样斤斤计较，都不能说对方比自己占便宜。
”说明李尔王在心里早已把财产土地分好，所谓的“Which of you shall we say doth love us most?That we our largest bounty may extend.Where nature doth with merit challenge”不过是作为一种诱惑，让女儿们尽量地说好话。
这些都说明了李尔王虚荣心很强，爱听好话。
小女儿考狄利亚没有违背自己的良心夸大自己的感情，而是如是地表达。
作为一个长期处于最高统治地位的国王来说，总是被人赞赏常会导致虚荣心，他听惯了赞美的话，听惯了甜言蜜语，必然不习惯于小女儿的诚实和拙于言语。
李尔王听了非常不满意，要求考狄利亚修正自己的话，否则她将毁掉自己的命运。
考狄利亚坚持说实话是对他虚荣心的极大讽刺，长期习惯于生活在虚荣中的人不习惯于这种诚实，也不喜欢这种诚实，因此李尔王大怒。

二、考狄利亚考狄利亚是李尔王的小女儿，她诚实善良，勇敢正义。
当被父王问及有多爱父亲时，她诚实地把心中的想法表达出来。
第一幕第一场CORDELLA Unhappy that I am,I cannot heave My heart into my mouth;I love your majesty According to my bond;nor more nor less.考狄利亚不像姐姐们那样，违心夸大自己对父亲的感情，诚实地表达。
考狄利亚的话让父亲非常不高兴，面对父亲的怒意和威胁，考狄利亚依然按照自己的内心说实话。
CORDELLA Good my lord,You have begot me,bred me,loved me:I return those duties back as right fit,Obey you,love you,and most honour you.Why have my sisters husbands,,if they say they love you all?Haply,when I shall wed,that lord whose hand must take my plight shall carry half my love with him,half my care and duty:Sure,I shall never marry like my sister,To love my father all.考狄利亚羞怯的外表包藏着一颗火热的心，话不动听，却郑地有声。
对父亲真诚的爱，最终没有得到父亲的理解，还被父亲断绝了父女关系，她却并不后悔。
三、高纳里尔和里根考狄利亚的两个姐姐，自私。
虚荣和残忍。
她们完全是养尊处优，只懂个人享受的极端个人主义资产阶级形象。
她们都是是狠毒、不忠、不孝、不贞、无知的女人，为了各自的利益驱赶自己年迈的老父，为了自己心中喜欢的浪人而毁灭自己的家，更是相互残害生命，直到死都不知道她们喜欢的那个男人也同样是一个狠毒的男人，而他只是在不断地利用她们罢了，或许是因为她们是国土的拥有都而对待依附她们的丈夫不屑一顾，甚至骂自己的丈夫是懦夫，可怜的两个男人，因为权利而葬送了自己的幸福一生。
她们根本就没有一个为人妻、为人女的样子。
当父亲分财产土地的时候，她们谄媚地说好话哄父亲。
但当她们得到分到土地时，她们马上“趁早想个办法”对付老国王。

在暴风雨交加的夜晚，任由她们的老父亲在郊外接受风雨的咆哮。

对自己的生身之父不仅不加以赡养，还驱逐去宫，不许别人帮助他。
她们虚伪自私、冷酷无情的性格由此可见。
她们不仅对父亲如此残忍，对自己的姐妹，丈夫一样凶残。
