例如：We listened carefully while the teacher read the text. 老师读课文时，我们都仔细听着。

(2)含come, go, leave, start, arrive表示位置移动的动词的句子时可以用过去进行时表示将要发生的动作。

例如：He told me that he was going soon. 他告诉我他很快就要走了。

(3)过去进行时与always等词连用时带有一定的感情色彩。

例如：He was always fighting with others. 他总是跟别人打架。

二、过去进行时与一般过去时的区别1.时间状语的区别(1)一般过去式常表示在过去某时发生的动作或存在的状态（包括过去习惯动作）。

常与一般过去时连用的时间状语有：just now, a moment ago, yesterday, last week(month, year), the day before yesterday及表示过去的时间状语从句。

例如：I was sixteen yesterday old last year. 我去年16岁。

He worked in a factory in 1986. 他1986年在一家工厂工作。

He often swam in the river when he was young. 他小时候常在河里游泳。

(2)过去进行时表示过去某一段时间或某一时刻正在进行的动作。

常与之连用的时间状语有：at that time/moment, (at) this time yesterday (last night/Sunday/week…),at+点钟+yesterday (last night / Sunday…)，when sb. did sth.等时间状语从句。

What were you doing at seven p.m. yesterday? 昨天晚上七点你在干什么？I first met Mary three years ago. She was working at a radio shop at the time.我第一次遇到玛丽是在三年前，当时她在一家无线电商店工作。

2.一般过去时往往表示某一动作已经完成，而过去进行时却表示动作在持续或未完成。

I saw you while you were speaking to the teacher. 你在和老师谈话时我看见了你。

注意：有的过去时间状语既可用于一般过去时，也可用于过去进行时，但含义不同。

例如： She wrote a letter to her friend last ni ght. 她昨晚给她的朋友写了封信。

（信写完了）She was writing a letter to her friend last night. 她昨晚一直在给她的朋友写信。

（信不一定写完）三、注意的问题英语中有四类动词一般不用进行时（不用现在进行时和过去进行时）(1)表心理状态、情感的动词，如love, hate, like, care, respect, please, prefer, know等，若用进行时则词意改变。

I’m forgetting it. (=beginning to forget)(2)表存在、状态的动词，如appear, exist, lie, remain, stand, seem等(3)表感觉的动词，如see, hear, feel, smell, sound, taste等(4)表一时性的动词，如accept, allow, admit, decide, end, refuse, permit, promise等。

【补充】before, after, until引导的时间状语从句before引导的时间状语从句表示主句的动作发生在从句动作之前。

例如：See me before you leave. 在你离开之前来看我。

Before they drive any of the buses, they will have to pass a special test.在驾驶公交车之前，他们必须通过专门的测验。

after引导的时间状语从句表示主句的动作发生在从句之后。

例如：I saw them after I arrived. 在我抵达之后，我见到了他们。

I found his pen after he left. 在他走之后，我找到了他的笔。

until常与not一起连用，意为“直到…才”，例如：He didn’t finish his homework until his mother came back. 直到妈妈回来他才写完作业。
