About The Author
Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817) was an English novelist. She was born in a midclass family and was brought up in a comfortable environment. She was the youngest one of the eight children .
But under the social conditions then , women’s social position is pretty low . There is no equality between men and women . At that time , many young women of the middle class has three choices: get married 、stay at home as an old maid or become a governess(家庭女教师) . Nobody wants to become a maid or governess which has low income as well as low social position.
Common the life is ,it also supplies her with material to create the classical novels . When she was still a young girl , she was skilled at various styles of writing, and when she finished the classical novel Pride and Prejudice , she was just twenty-two years old. And it was clear that she had found her appropriate form.
And in the novel Pride and Prejudice, she takes the theme of love and marriage in a mildly humorous way of expression.
Social Context Of The Novel
In late eighteenth century , Britain was experiencing great changes in history , Capitalist(资本主义) Agriculture、Anglo French war(英法战争)、industrial revolution which make Britain the most powerful capitalist empire .
As what I said before , Britain was then the most powerful country in the Europe , so there is no significant social contradiction . As a result , Jane Austen focused more attention on the life around , She describes the rural middleclass life which was not influenced by the industrial revolution yet .
Although in the novel Pride and Prejudice the hero and heroine finally has a happy ending , Jane Austen was unmarried all her life. Maybe she didn’t find her prince charming. What a pity!
