All the people on the bus were dancing and shouting when seeing the ribbons.C. Yellow ribbons probably symbolize welcome.D. Martha wanted Vingo to come back home.( B )Scientists in England have discovered that the cliché about people being ―fat and happy‖ is accurate. Fat people are more cheerful than their thin peers.I thought this just repeated the ancient wisdom that says you shouldn’t go on a totally fat-free diet because your brain needs its fat surround to keep from crashing against your skull. That makes you depressed, apparently. But you don’t have to be fat to maintain this fatty covering; you just have to not be anorexic(厌食的).This is neither a reworking of the slightly less ancient study that found people with notable self-control were more likely to be depressed. It appeared to demonstrate that hedonists(享乐主义者)were happier than puritans.Nobody needs a scientist to tell them that. They just need to study most TV soaps. The people enjoying themselves are the fat, jolly ones. The people who worry about how they look, and what people think of them and whether drinking too much beer will turn out to be a signal that they are bound for hell—those people don’t enjoy themselves so much. The new research simply asked whether fat people kill themselves. Are they prone to depression or anxiety? The answers were all no. Not only are you less depressed when overweight, but it works in proportion. The fatter you get, the less likely you are to commit suicide.Doctors proposed a theory that thin people made themselves depressed with the effort of keeping thin. It’s feasible, I suppose, but there are plenty of fat people on diets who are making all that effort and failing, and they seem pretty cheerful.Lacking an explanation, we have to fall back on ―comfort eating.‖ This is far from being a sarcastic phrase, like ―panic buying.‖ You do actually gain comfort from eating. As a really fat actress once said, ―Ain’t nothing as loving as something from the oven.‖ As a rhyme, it works better in an American accent; as a concept, it’s true in any language. What makes this fat and happy curve so surprising is that fat people have a horrible time at the hands of society. This year it was revealed that they were less likely to land jobs. Next year it’ll probably be even worse. And still they smile. If there really is a direct correlation between body mass index and mental health, why should skinny people get free antidepressant(抗忧郁药)? Surely they’re responsible for their own depressions.68. Which in the following is NOT among the signals for people who easily get depressed?A. Worrying about whether they drink too much.B. Eating a lot as comfortably as they can.C. Paying too much attention to what people think of them.D. Not knowing what to wear to please other people.69 What can you conclude from the passage?A. We get to know that ―fat people are happier‖ from TV soaps.B. Fat can prevent you from committing suicide.C. It is and will be difficult for fat people to hunt jobs.D. Going on a diet is one of the causes of depression.70. If you want to be happy, you’d better ______.A. eat as much as you canB. enjoy yourselfC. go on a dietD. grow fat71. The last paragraph probably implies that ______.A. thin people should not get free antidepressantB. the figures of people do have something to do with mental healthC. it is skinny people’s own worries that result in their depressionD. there is no direct relation between people’s body shape and mental health( C )Come on –Everybody’s doing it. That whispered message, half invitation and half forcing, is what most of us think of when we hear the words peer pressure. It usually leads to no good-drinking, drugs and casual sex. But in her new book Join the Club, Tina Rosenberg says that peer pressure can also be a positive force through what she calls the social cure, in which organizations and officials use the power of group interactive influence to help individuals improve their lives and possibly the words.Rosenberg, the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize, offers a host of example of the social cure in action: In South Carolina, a state-sponsored antismoking program called Rage Against the Haze sets out to make cigarettes uncool. In South Africa, an HIV-Prevention Plan known as Love Life takes in young people to promote safe sex among their peers. The idea seems promising, and Rosenberg is a perceptive observer. Her critique of the lameness of many pubic-health campaigns is spot-on: they fail to mobilize peer pressure for healthy habits, and they demonstrate a seriously wrong understanding of psychology. ―Dare to be different, please don’t smoke!‖ pleads one billboard campaign aimed at reducing smoking among teenagers --- teenagers, who desire nothing more than fitting in. Rosenberg argues convincingly that public-health supporters ought to take a page from advertisers, so skilled at applying peer pressure. But on the general effectiveness of the social cure, Rosenberg is less persuasive. Join the Club is filled with too much irrelevant detail and not enough exploration of the social and biological factors that make peer pressure so powerful. The most glaring mistake of the social cure as it’s presented here is that it doesn’t work very well for very long. Rage Against the Haze failed once state funding was cut. Evidence that the Love Life program produces lasting changes is limited and mixed. There’s no doubt tha t our peer groups exert enormous influence on our behavior. An emerging body of research shows that positive health habits as well as negative ones spread through networks of friends via social communication. This is an unnoticeable form of peer pressure: we unconsciously imitate the behavior we see every day.Far less certain, however, is how successfully experts and officials can select our peer groups and take control of their activities in virtuous directions. It’s like the teacher who breaks up the tro ublemakers in the back row by pairing them with better-behaved classmates. The method never really works. And that’s the problem with a social cure engineered from the outside: in the real world, as in school, we insist on choosing our own friends.72. According to the first paragraph, peer pressure often emerges as ______.A. a cause of undesirable behaviorsB. a supplement to the social cureC. an obstacle to school progressD. a stimulus to group dynamics (相互影响)73. Rosenberg holds that public supporters should ______.A. enroll professional advertisersB. recognize the limitations of advertisementsC. learn from advertisers’ experienceD. stay away from commercial advertisers74. In the aut hor’s view, Rosenberg’s book fails to ______.A. produce a long-lasting social effectB. adequately explore social and biological factorsC. illustrate the functions of state fundingD. effectively avoid the fault of the social cure75. Paragraph 5 shows that our imitation of behaviors ______.A. is harmful to our networks of friendsB. can produce negative health habitsC. occurs without our realizing itD. will mislead behavioral studiesSection C 5%Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.76._______________As awareness of the benefits of humor increases, most of us want to get all the laughs we can, It seems that every day there is another new discovery about the power of humor to help us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Every system of the body responds to laughter in some important or positive way.77._______________Many people mistakenly believe that we are born with a sense of humor. They think that when it comes to a sense of humor, ―either you’ve got it or you don’t.‖ This is false! What is true, however, is that the ability to laugh and smile is actually something we are born with. For example, we laugh when we are tickled under the arm, even without thinking about how to react.78._______________The parts of the brain and central nervous system that control laughing and smiling are mature at birth in human infants, but that is not the same thing as having a sense of humor. (After all, when a baby laughs in his small bed we don’t rush over and say, ―That kid has a great sense of humor!‖) Your sense of humor is something you can develop over a lifetime. Don’t be nervous before others and try to laugh at yourself --- then you will make them laugh, too.79._______________Humor includes a lot more than laughing and joke telling. Many people worry needlessly that they do not have a good sense of humor because they are not good joke tellers. More than jokes, a sense of humor requires being willing and able to see the funny side of life’s situations as they happen. In fact, one of the best definitions of a sense of humor is ―the ability to see the non-serious element in a situation.80._______________There may be a thousand different ways to express your sense of humor, but joke telling is only one of those ways. As more is discovered about how humor benefits our life, more people will be able to see and enjoy the humor when they are in a difficult situation. Life depends on air, food and water, but it is made easier to live with a good sense of humor.Section D 8%Direction: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest words. (Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 12 WORDS.)VANESSA Folkerts is a junior at Princeton. She has spent two summers in intensive language study in Beijing and speaks good Chinese. "These days, nobody questions why you take Chinese and go to China," said Folkerts. "It has its obvious uses. I know a lot of people who are interested because the economic power in China is rising."Folkerts is not alone. Record numbers of American students are studying abroad, with especially strong growth in educational exchanges with China, said a yearly report by the Institute on International Education in the US. According to the report Open Doors 2008, the number of Americans studying in China increased by 25 percent.―Interest in China is growing dramatically, and I think we’ll see even sharper increases in next year’s report,‖ said Allan Goodman, president of the institute. ―People used to go to China to study the history and language, and many still do. But with China looming so large in all our futures, more students go for an understanding of what’s happening there economically and politically.‖China is now the fifth-most-popular destination for American students. In the 2006-07 school year, 11,064 Americans studied in China. This is a large jump from 1995-96, when only 1,396 Americans studied there. Many American universities are hard-pressed to keep up with the interest in China. This is because there are now hundreds of study-abroad programs in China, most including language study, some focus on martial arts, herbal medicine, culture, history or business.According to report, the number of Chinese students studying at American universities is on the rise, too, a 20 percent increase last year.As the RMB is becoming more expensive against the US dollar, Chinese students are happy to see their cost for studying abroad has dropped about 15 percent compared to a couple of years ago. But others are concerned that the global financial crisis will lessen their chance to get scholarships. However, experts said that influence is limited. ―According to the numbers from my agent, there is still more to study in the US,‖ said Sun Nan, manager at the Globe Edu, one of the major agents if studying abroad for Chinese stude nts. ―That’s because of the more favorable visa policies to international students and more recruitment from the US universities.‖(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statement in NO MORE THAN 12 WORDS.)81. By saying ―Folkerts is not alone‖ in Paragraph 2, the author means that __________________________.82. What are the foreign students’ two purposes in studying in China nowadays according to Allan?83. ______________________________________ make American universities find it hard to keep up with.84. We can conclude from the passage that it is ____________________ that encourages some of the Chineseand American students to study in the other country.第II卷I.
