1. Apollo is more rational than Dionysus.

Sun is always assotiates with lives. Since it devotes itself to illuminates everything and give

people energy and warmth. So Apollo, the god of sunlight and art, is more impressive to people of

its bright side. And he really shows that. He is persistent to love in chasing Daphne and absolutely

brave and potent in fighting with Python. Though he is also a little self-willed and sometimes

without sympathy, which are the common characteristics of greek gods, but his positive qualities

are more outstanding. As to Dionysus, the god of wine, He is supposed to be more irrational. As

we all know, alcohol typically develops our various desires. And Dionysus usually acts daftly. He has

inumerable means of revenge and never shows his mercy.

2. Apollo represents the surface of art but Dionysus is closer to the essence of art.

Sunlight lights up everything and also gives the world a simple but superficial carrier to help us

form different definitions to all the things around us. In other words, it gives everything

appearances and characters that we can feel directly. To some extent sunlight is the most

intuitional representation of everything in this world, not only apparent one but also internal. It’s

similar as the habitual way of us to make artistic creations. We are used to thinking that we can

have an insight into everything’s nature by attaining more attention to the surface-beauty,

including the visual appearance and ethical inherent. We label all the excellent artistic works with

reflecting our lives or reflecting good and evil. But we have to know that conventions and morality

sometimes represent hypocrisy and abstinence. The highest level of art is primitive and is to restore

the unconscious mind repressed by morality. In this case, obviously Dionysus is closer to the

essence of art since it shows the true humanity. Art are our desires but also used as the tool of

control desires. Dionysus is like the the former and Apollo is the latter.

3. Apollo is the representative of the power of reason, while Dionysus is the representative of the

emotional power. They play different roles in different developed process of times and they are

complementary.

Apollo acts more reasonally beacause most of his stories can still meet with today’s moral

standards. In contrast, Dionysus is inclined to be passional and adventurous. The spirit of Dionysus

is the original force to brace the society for develiping. We can tell from the history clearly that it

is the spirit of creation and innovation that promote the develop of times. The grand historical

events are all about exploration and changes. But when these spirits have reached to a hiah levle,

the society will turn to be unordered. And that is the time when reason will be praised.The process

of human civilization is the development process of rational and emotional checks and balances.

4. Apollo and Dionysus are alike since they both have common characterstics of the greek gods.

They are both bad-tempered, selfish and emotional and have similar negetive character. There

qre only slight defference between them in degree of their bad aspects. They are just more alike

than different.
