“和谐社会”的英文演讲稿“和谐社会”的英文演讲稿“和谐社会”的英文演讲稿*在耶鲁大学演讲英文版Letmebeginbythankingyou,Mr.Levin,foryourkindinvitationandtheoortunity tocometoYaletomeetyoungfriendsandteachersofthisworld-renowneduniversi ingtotheYalecampus,withitsdistinctiveacademicflavor,andlookinga ttheeageryoungfacesintheaudience,Icaotbutrecallmygreatexperiencestudy ingatQinghuaUniversityinBeijing40yearsago.Indeed,whathaeduringone’ss choolyearwillinfluencehiswholelife.Istillbenefitgreatlyfromtheitructi onandmyinteractionwithotherstudents.Yaleisrenownedforitslonghistory,uniquewayofteachingandexcellenceinaca demicpursuit.Iftimecouldgobackseveraldecades,Iwouldreallyliketobeastu dentofYalejustlikeyou.Yale’smotto“LightandTruth,”whichisacallingforhumanprogre,represent stheairationofeverymotivatedyoungmanandwoman.Overthepastthreecenturie s,Yalehasproducedagalaxyofoutstandingfigures,including20Nobellaureate sandfiveAmericanpresidents.ThewordsofNathanHale,anAmericanheroandYale alumnus,“IonlyregretthatIhavebutonelifetoloseformycountry,”havealso iiredmeandmanyotherChinese.IsincerelyhopethatYalewillproducemoretalen tandcontributefurthertothesocialandeconomicdevelopmentoftheUnitedStat esandthecauseofhumanprogre.Ladiesandgentlemen,dearfriends.TheChineseandAmericahavealwayshadaninteeinterestinandcareddeeplyabout eachother.TheChineseadmirethepioneeringandenterprisingiritoftheAmeric aandtheirproudachievementinnationaldevelopment.AsChinadevelorapidlyan dsteadyheadwayismadeinChina-U.S.cooperation,moreandmoreAmericaarefoll owingwithgreatinterestChina’sprogreanddevelopment.Understandingleadstotrust.Today,IwouldliketoeaktoyouaboutChina’sdeve lopmentstrategyanditsfutureagaitthebackdropoftheevolutionoftheChinese civilizationandChina’scurrentdevelopmentendeavor.Ihopethiswillhelpyo ugainabetterunderstandingofChina.Inahistorythatamorethanfivemilleia,theChinesenationhascontributedsign ificantlytotheprogreofhumancivilization.Butitscourseofnationaldevelop menthasbeenanarduousone.Inparticularinthe160yearsandmoresincetheOpium Warin1840,theChinesepeoplehave “和谐社会”的英文演讲稿第2页foughtcourageouslyandunyieldinglytoridthemselvesofpovertyandbackwardn eandtorealizenationalrejuvenation,thusprofoundlychangingthedestinyoft heChinesenation.Ninety-fiveyearsago,theChinesepeoplelaunchedtheRevolu tionof1911thatoverthrewthefeudalautocracywhichhadruledChinaforseveral thousandyearsandopene dthedoortoChina’sprogre.Fifty-sevenyearsago,theChinesepeoplesucceededinwiingliberationafterpr otractedandhardstruggleandfoundedNewChinainwhichpeoplebecametheirownm asters.Twenty-eightyearsago,theChinesepeopleembarkeduponthehistoricdr iveofreform,opening-upandmodernizationandhavemadephenomenalprogrethro ughunremittingefforts.Between1978and20xx,China’sGDPgrewfrom$147.3billionto$2.2257trillion. Itsimportandexportvolumewentupfrom$20.6billionto$1.4221trillionandits foreignexchangereservesoaredfrom$167millionto$818.9billion.Duringthis period,thenumberofitspoorruralpopulationdroedfrom250millionto23millio n.Theabovereviewoftheprofoundchangesinthese160yearsshowsonething,name ly,bycarryingoutpersistentandhardstruggle,theChinesepeoplehavebothcha ngedtheirowndestinyandadvancedthecauseofhumanprogre.Ontheotherhand,Ineedtopointoutthat,deitethesucceinitsdevelopment,Chin aremaitheworld’slargestdevelopingcountry,withpercapitaGDPrankingbehi ndthe100thplace.TheChinesepeopleareyettoliveawell-offlifeandChinastil lfacesdauntingchallengesinitsdevelopmentendeavor.Thereforeitrequiress ustainedandunremittingeffortstotraformthecountryandmakelifebetterfori tspeople.Inthenext15years,wewillstrivetomakenewprogreinbuildingamoder atelyproeroussocietyinanall-roundwaythatwillbenefitChina’sonebi llion andmorepopulation.WeaimtoraiseChina’sGDPto$4trillionby2020,averaging$3,000perperson.By then,China’seconomywillbebetterdevelopedanditsdemocracywillbefurther enhanced.Moreprogrewillbemadeinscienceandeducation.Itsculturewillbefu rtherenriched,thesocietywillbecomemoreharmoniousandthepeoplewillleada betterlife.Torealizethesegoals,Chinahasadoptedanewconceptofdevelopmentinlinewith itsnationalconditioandtherequirementofthetimes.Thatis,topursueascient ificoutlookondevelopmentthatmakeseconomicandsocialdevelopmentpeople-o riented,compreheive,balancedandsustainable.Wewillworktostrikeaproperb alancebetweenurbanandruraldevelopment,developmentamongregio,economica ndsocialdevelopment,developmentofmanandnature,anddomesticdevelopmenta ndopeningwidertotheoutsideworld.Greateremphasiswillbeputonaddreingiue saffectingpeople’slivelihood,overcomingimbalancesindevelopmentandres olvingkeyproblemsthathaveoccurredinthecourseofdevelopment.Wewillpursueanewpathtoindustrializationfeaturinghightechnology,goodeconomicretur ,lowresource-coumption,lowenvironmentpollutionandfulluseofhumanresour ces.Wewillbringaboutcoordinatedeconomic,political,culturalandsocialde velopment.Andwewillendeavortoeuresustainabledevelopmentbyboostingprod uction,improvingpeople’slifeandprotectingtheenvironment.ThisconceptofscientificdevelopmentisbasedontheexperienceChinahasgaine dinitsmodernizationdriveandputforthinreoetothetrendsofthetimes.Itisal sorootedintheculturalheritagesoftheChinesenation.TheChinesecivilizationisonethathascontinueduninterruptedformorethan5, 000years.ThedistinctculturaltraditionoftheChinesenationthatdevelopedi nthelongcourseofhistoryhasexertedastronginfluenceoncontemporaryChina, justasitdidonancientChina.Puttingpeoplefirst,keepingpacewiththetimes, maintainingsocialharmonyandpursuingpeacefuldevelopment:thesevaluestha tarebeingpursuedinChinatodayarederivedfromitstradition.Buttheyalsogiv eexpreiontotheprogreofthetimes.TheChinesecivilizationhasalwaysgivenprominencetothepeopleandreectforp eople’sdignityandvalue.Centuriesago,theChinesealreadypoin tedoutthat “peoplearethefoundationofacountry;whenthefoundationisstable,thecount ryisinpeace.”Nothingismorevaluableintheuniversethanhumanbeings.Thean cientChineseemphasizedthevalueofservingthepeople,enrichingthem,nouris hingthem,andbenefitingthem.Wearepursuingtodayapeople-orientedaroachto warddevelopmentbecausewebelievethatdevelopmentmustbeforthepeopleandby thepeopleanditsbenefitshouldbesharedamongthepeople.Wecareaboutpeople’svalue,rightsandinterestsandfreedom,thequalityofth eirlife,andtheirdevelopmentpotentialandhaineindexbecauseourgoalistore alizetheall-arounddevelopmentofthepeople.Euringtherighttosurvivalandd evelopmentremaiChina’stoppriority.Wewillvigorouslypromotesocialandec onomicdevelopment,protectpeople’sfreedom,democracyandhumanrightsacco rdingtolaw,achievesocialfairneandjusticeandenablethe1.3billionChinese peopletoliveahaylife.TheChinesecivilizationhasalwaysgivenprominencetounremittingself-impro vement,reformandiovation.AsanancientChinesemottoputsit,“AsHeavenkeev igorthroughmovement,agentlemanshouldunremittinglypracticeself-improve ment.”Throughoutits5,000-yearhistory,itisthankstotheirperseverance,d etermination,staminaandiovationthattheChinesenationhasgrownaftersurvi vingnumeroussetbacksandadversity.TheChinesepeoplehaveshownenterprisin giritandreformandopening-upcreativityinnationaldevelopmentandgreatten acityinovercomingdifficultiesontheroadtoprogre.Andallthisgivesexpreio ntotheiritofunremittingself-improvementembodiedinChina’sculturaltradition.TheChinesecivilizationhasalwaysgivenprominencetosocialharmony,unityan dmutualaistance.BackintheearlydaysoftheChinesenation,theChinesealread yadvocatedthat“harmonyismostvaluable.”Theystroveforharmonybetweenma nandnature,amongpeopleandbetweenman’sbodyandsoul,andyearnedforanidea lsocietywhere“everyoneloveseveryoneelse,e veryoneisequalandthewholewo rldisonecommunity.”Today,Chinaisendeavoringtobuildaharmonioussociety.Itisasocietyofdemoc racyandruleoflaw,fairneandjustice,integrity,fraternity,vitality,stabi lity,orderandharmonybetweenmanandnature.Itisasocietywherethereisunity betweenthematerialandtheirit,democracyandruleoflaw,fairneandefficienc y,andvitalityandorder.TheChinesepeopletakes[sic]themaintenanceofethnicunityandharmonyasthei rboundendutyandthedefeeofthecountry’ssovereigntyandterritorialintegr itytheirsacredmiion.Anyactthatpromotedethnicharmonyandnationalunitywillreceivethewarmwelc omeandsuortoftheChinesepeople.Ontheotherhand,anyactthatunderminesChin a’sethnicharmonyandnationalunitywillmeettheirstrongoositionandresist ance.TheChinesecivilizationhasalwaysgivenprominencetogoodneighborline.TheC reignrelatio,theChinesehavealwaysbelie vedthat“thestrongshouldnotoretheweakandtherichshouldnotbullythepoor ”andadvocatedthat“allnatiolivesidebysideinperfectharmony.”TheChineseheldthat“oneshouldbeasinclusiveastheocean,whichisvastbecau seitadmitshundredsofrivers”andcalledfordrawinguponthestrengthofother s.Today,Chinaholdshighthebaerofpeace,developmentandcooperation.Itpurs uesanindependentforeignpolicyofpeaceandcommitsitselffirmlytopeacefuld evelopment.Itseekstoaccelerateitsdevelopmentbyupholdingworldpeace.Theworldpeacei s,inturn,enhancedbyChina’sdevelopment.Chinafirmlypursuesastrategyofo pening-upformutualbenefitandwin-winoutcomes.Itgenuinelywishestoenteri ntoexteivecooperationwithothercountries.Itisinclusiveandiseagertodraw onthestrengthofothercivilizatiotopursuepeaceanddevelopmentthroughcoop erationandplayitspartinbuildingaharmoniousworldofenduringpeaceandcomm onproerity.Ladiesandgentlemen,dearfriends.ChinaandtheUnitedStatesarebothcountriesofvastterritorywheremanyethnic groucoexistanddifferentculturesintermingle.Bothourtwopeoplesarehard-w orkingandtalented.Duetodifferenthistoricalbackgroundsandnationalcondi tio,therearedifferencesbetweenChinaandtheUnitedStates.Butthisenablesu stolearnf romeachotheranddrawoneachother’sstrengths.CloserChina-U.S.c ooperationservesthefundamentalinterestsofourtwocountriesandpeoplesand isalsooffar-reachingsignificanceforpeaceanddevelopmentofthewholeworld.Vastasitis,thePacificOceanhasnotstoodinthewayofexchangesandcooperatio nbetweenourtwopeoplesoverthepasttwohundredyears,andmanymovingepisodes ofmutuallearningandmutualhelpbetweenourtwopeopleswhorepresentdifferen tcivilizatiohavebeenrecorded.Inthe27yearssincetheestablishmentofdiplo maticrelatioin1979,China-U.S.relatiohavemaintainedsteadymomentumofgro wthdeitetwistsandturontheway,bringingtremendousbenefitstobothcountrie sandpeoples.Enteringthe21stcentury,theworldhascontinuedtoundergoprofoundchanges.P eaceanddevelopmentremainthecallingofourtimes.Ontheotherhand,factorsca usingitabilityanduncertaintyareincreasingandnewchallengesandthreatsar elooming.Agaitthisbackdrop,thecommoninterestsbetweenourtwocountriesar eincreasingandtheareasofourcooperationwidening.Globalpeaceandsecurity nowfacenewchallenges,suchasfightinginternationalterrorism,preventingt heproliferationofweapoofmadestruction,protectingtheenvironmentandhuma nhabitatandcombatingtraationalcrimes.Anditisexactlyinthesefieldsthatw eshareimportantstrategicinterests.Chinahasahugemarketanditsdevelopmen thasgeneratedstrongdemand,whiletheUnitedStateshasadvancedtechnologyan dhighqualityproducts.Thishascreatedenormousoortunitiesforeconomicandt echnicalcooperationbetweenourtwocountries.Indeed,thereisabroadproectf orthegrowthofcotructiveandcooperativeChina-U.S.relatioinallfields.Yesterdaymorning,PresidentBushandIhadanin-depthexchangeofviewsonChina-U.S.relatioandmajorinternationalandregionaliuesofcommoninterestandre achedbroadandimportantagreement.Wearebothoftheviewthatthetwosidesshou ldaroachourrelatiofromthestrategicandlong-termperectiveandthatweshoul denhancedialogue,expandcommonground,increasemutualtrust,deepencoopera tionandpromotetheoverallgrowthofthecotructiveandcooperativeChina-U.S. relatiointhe21stcentury.WhenwefocusontheoverallinterestofChina-U.S.relatio,reectandshowunders tandingtoeachother,Iamconfidentthatourrelatiowillmoveaheadinahealthya ndsteadymaer,andcontributetothewell-beingofourtwopeoplesandbringgreat erhopetopeoplearoundtheworld.Ladiesandgentlemen,dearfriends.Acomposercaotwriteenchantingmelodywithonenote,andapaintercaotpaintlan dscapewithonlyonecolor.Theworldisatreasurehousewheretheuniquecultural achievementscreatedbypeopleofallcountriesaredilayed.Thecultureofanati ontellsalotabouttheevolutionofthenation’sunderstandingoftheworldandl ife,bothpastandpresent.Cul turethusembodiesanation’sfundamentalpursui tofmindanddictatesitsnormsofbehavior.Thehistoricalproceofhumandevelop mentisoneinwhichdifferentcivilizatiointeractwithandenricheachotherand allcivilizatioinhumanhistoryhavecontributedtohumanprogreintheirownuni queway.Culturaldiversityisabasicfeatureofbothhumansocietyandtoday’sworldand animportantdrivingforceforhumanprogre.Ashistoryhasshown,inthecourseof interactiobetweencivilizatio,wenotonlyneedtoremovenaturalbarriersando vercomephysicalisolation,wealsoneedtoremoveotaclesandotructioofthemin dandovercomevariousprejudicesandmisunderstandings.Differencesinideolo gy,socialsystemanddevelopmentmodelshouldnotstandinthewayofexchangesam ongcivilizatio,stillleshouldtheybecomeexcusesformutualconfrontation.W eshouldupholdthediversityoftheworld,enhancedialogueandinteractionbetw eencivilizatio,anddrawoneachother’sstrengthiteadofpracticingmutualex clusion.Whenthisisdone,mankindwillenjoygreaterharmonyandhaineandthewo rldwillbecomeamorecolorfulplacetolivein.Ladiesandgentlemen,dearfriends.Exchangesincultureandeducationandamongyoungpeopleserveasabridgeforinc slater,hegraduatedwithdistinctionandreceivedabachelorofartsdegree,mak ter,groupaf tergroupofyoungChinesefollowedhisfootsteandstudiedinYale.Overthepast2 0years,Yalehasacceptedover4,000Chinesestudentsandundertakenmorethan80 cooperationprojectsinculture,scienceandtechnology,andeducationwithChi stsummer,YalesentthefirstgroupofstudentstoChinaforinterhiandsome amongthembecamethefirstforeignintertoworkwithChina’sPalaceMuseum.Iwi shtotakethisoortunitytoexpremyareciationtoyou,Mr.Levin,andYaleforthee ffortsyouhavemadetopromoteexchangesbetweenourtwopeoples.Toenhancemutualunderstandingbetweenyoungpeopleandeducatorsofthetwocou
