The United Kingdom is a major developed capitalist economy. It is the world's 6th largest by nominal GDP and the 3rd largest in Europe after Germany and France. The UK was the first country in the world to industrialize in the 18th and 19th centuries. However, as other nations industrialized, coupled with economic decline after two World Wars, the UK began to lose its competitive advantage. At the start of the 21st century, however, the UK still maintains an important role in the global economy.
