摘要李煜一生经历了几个不同的时期，各个时期均有对他产生重大影响的事件，因而其生活各个时期的特征非常明显。
依据李煜一生所历和各时期的思想情感，我将其分为四个时期，并用知人论世法对其词作的内容情感进行分析，以期给他的所有词作以合理的分期，确定每首词所属的题材类别。
这样做的意义是给李煜词以明确的分期定类，从而使人们不再妄加揣测他某首词的创作时期，歪曲其词作的感情倾向。
李煜一生可分为四个时期。
第一个时期是从937 年农历七月初七出生，到959 年九月其兄弘冀去世。
这一时期李煜为汲汲追求皇位的兄长弘冀所嫉，整日愁郁忧惧。
第二个时期是从959 年九月其兄弘冀去世，到964 年十月初二其次子仲宣夭折。
这一时期他初登王位，又用对宋奉礼屈和之策，取得了国家的暂时安宁，因而生活相对平静，好逸乐的天性表现出来，与大周后及群臣整日宴舞欢歌，赏玩春色。
大周后病后他又与其妹女英沉入爱河，从而演绎了一段风流艳情佳话。
第三个时期是从964年十月初二其次子仲宣夭折，到975年十一月廿七南唐灭亡。
这一时期李煜的爱子仲宣不幸夭折，爱妻大周后娥皇又病逝，接着其弟从善朝宋被羁，宋对南唐威逼日急，李煜既悲又愁。
第四个时期是从975 年十一月廿七南唐灭亡，到978 年七月初八李煜去世。
这一时期李煜被囚于“礼贤宅”内，境遇凄惨，心情哀苦，又常思恋故旧，倍增其愁。

引言李煜生于李昪昇元元年（937 年）七月初七，卒于宋太宗太平兴国三年(978年)七月初八，字重光，初名从嘉，号钟隐，又称钟山隐士、钟峰隐居、钟峰隐者、钟峰白莲居士、莲峰居士。
他天生一幅奇表,天资聪颖，好读书，工书画，晓音律，善诗文，而词为尤胜，是一位博学多才的文艺天才。
他为人仁惠淳厚，天性儒弱，素昧威武，然风神洒脱，多情善感。
他本冀“被父兄之荫育，乐日月之优游”[1]，然天命无算，世事多变，五兄皆不幸早亡，李煜在父璟卒后，承父诏，于961 年嗣立为南唐国主，世称李后主。
多情的才人走上了政治舞台，儒弱的李煜被推到了风口浪尖，一个人生的悲剧开始了，从而也促成了词体新风格的飞升。

“本于诸子，实愧非才。
自出胶庠，心疏利禄”[2]的李煜，于961 年在金陵即位，这对他来说，实为意外之获。
他本李璟第六子，上有五兄，按封建帝位之传承次序，皇位本与他无关，然“以伯仲继没，次第推迁”[3]，幸而为帝。
