1.What is phonetics(语音学) and what does it cover?
答:Phonetics is the science of speech sounds. It deals with the sound system of a language. English phonetics covers the articulation, classification and combination of the English speech sounds. It also deals with the laws of their changes, the rules of stresses and the intonation in English speech
3. How to classify consonants and monophthongs?
答:Consonants may be classified according to:
1) The work of the vocal cords
2) Place of articulation
3) Manner of articulation
Many consonants go in pairs with one of them voiced and the other voiceless.
4. What is elision? How many types of elision are there in English?
答:Elision means the omission of a sound or sounds, either within the body of a word or at a junction of words. There are historical elisions and contextual elisions.
5. How to distinguish a word’s strong form and weak form?
答:A weak form of a word is generally distinguished form a strong form
1) By the difference in vowel-sounds
2) By the absence of a sound (vowel and consonant)
3) By the difference in the length of a vowel
6. What is incomplete plosion?
答:When a plosive consonant is immediately followed by another plosive, only the second plosive is fully exploded, but the closure is held for double the usual time.
The first plosive is incomplete. This is known as incomplete plosion.
7. What is progressive assimilation and double assimilation?
答:In progressive assimilation the assimilated sound is influenced by the preceding sound. Or double, assimilation the neighbouring sounds influence each other.
8. What is assimilation?
答:In connected speech, sounds, under the influence of their neighbors, are replace by other sounds. Sometimes two neighbouring sounds influence each other and are replaced by a third sound which is different from both the original sounds. This process is called assimilation.。
