“I, why, my lady, I…” 【“我，啊，夫人，我……”】
“I know you did it on purpose to protect your friends. Well, you will be sorry. 【“我知道你是故意这么做来保护你的朋友们。好吧，你会感到遗憾的。 】 Since you like to talk so much, I'll punish you with a different kind of conversation. 【既然你这么喜欢和人说话，我要用一种不同的谈话方式来教训你。】 From now on, you will never be able to speak first in a conversation at all. You will only be able to repeat what others say to you. ” 【今后，你和人谈话不得先开口，你只能重复别人对你说过的话。”】 And that is what happened. Poor Echo! She could only repeat what others said in her presence. 【这就是事情的开端。可怜的艾珂!她只能重复别人在她面前说过的话了。】
One day, she was walking through the forest, she happened upon a handsome young man. 【一天，她在森林中行走，遇到了一个漂亮的小伙子。】 He was a young hunter by the name of Narcissus and he was so good-looking that women and nymphs and even goddesses practically threw themselves at his feet. 【他叫纳西索斯，是一个年轻的猎人。纳西索斯确实十分英俊，世俗和仙 界女子，甚至女神都拜倒在他的脚下。】
And what of proud Narcissus? What of the young man who thought he was too good-looking for anyone? 【骄傲的纳西索斯又如何了呢?那个自以为相貌盖世的年轻人怎样了 呢 ?】 He left a trail of broken hearts behind him, women who told him of their love and then were tossed aside. 【他在身后留下的印迹是一连串破碎的心。那些向他表示过爱意的女 子都被他弃置一旁】 At last, one of these women prayed to the gods for justice. 【最后，其中一位女子向神祈祷，讨个公道。】 “Narcissus should feel as we have all felt about him, ”said this young woman. 【 “纳西索斯应该体会一下我们对他的感情，”这位年轻女子说。】 And the gods heard. They determined to punish proud Narcissus. 【众神听了后决定惩罚傲慢的纳西索斯。】
Hera was queen of all the goddesses and her husband was Zeus, the god of thunder and lightning. 【赫拉是众神之后，雷电之神宙斯的妻 子。】 Hera told Echo that she suspected Zeus had another lady friend besides her among the forest nymphs. 【赫拉告诉艾珂，她怀疑宙斯除她之外， 在森林女仙中还有情人。】 “I'm determined to find out who it is and punish her with my powerful magic, ”said Hera. 【“我一定要找出她是谁，随后用我的 强大的魔法来惩处她，”赫拉说道。】
“But it matches your blue eyes so beautifully. And did the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite, suggest that to you? Oh, you look so lovely. ” 【“这件长袍和您的蓝眼睛是多么般配啊！难道阿佛洛狄忒爱神没有向您说 起过吗?啊，您看上去可爱极啦！”】 “Do you really think so? ” 【“真的?”】 “Oh, yes. ”And she soon engaged Hera in a long conversation. 【“当然。”接着，她和赫拉越说越多。】 By the time they were through, sure enough, all the forest nymphs had escaped into the trees. 【无疑问，等她们说完的时候，所有的森林女仙都躲到树林里去了。】 When Hera looked around and realized what had happened, she grew very angry. 【赫拉拉环顾四周，意识到自己上当了，她十分恼火。】 “Echo, you did this on purpose. ” 【“艾珂，你是故意的。”】
The next day, while he was in the forest, he grew very thirsty for it was a hot day and he walked down to a still river to get a drink. 【第二天，天气炎热，纳西索斯在森林中感到干渴难忍，于是他走到一条河 边去取水。】 And as he leaned over the water, the magic took a hold of him. 【正当他向水面俯下身时，魔力攫住了他。】
And there she still dwells among the mountains and caves and canyons, 【以后她一直住在高山、洞穴和峡谷之间。】 And to this day, she can only repeat what others say and that is the origin of the Echo. 【直到今天，她还是只能重复别人说过的话。这就是艾珂，即回声的由来。】
And so she began to talk and gossip with Hera. 【于是她便和赫拉聊起天来。】

But Narcissus was vain. He thought he was so good-looking, he was better than anyone. 【但纳西索斯过于自负。他自恃外貌漂亮，深信自己胜过所有的人。】
At any rate, Echo fell in love with him instantly and she followed him through the trees. 【不管怎样，艾珂对他一见钟情，她跟着他在树林中走。】

The nymphs were magical creatures that lived out among the rocks, or the forests, or near the streams and they took care of those things. 【居住在山林水泽边的仙女也是神的造化物，她们照管着栖息的山岩、 森林和小溪。】
