The Bright Moon
Tune: “Prelude to the Melody of Water”
By Xu Yuanchong
On the night of Mid-Autumn Festival of 1076, I drank happily till dawn and wrote this in myCups while thinking of Ziyou.
Men have sorrow and joy, they part or meet again;
The moon may be bright or dim, she may wax or wane.
There has been nothing perfect since the olden days.
So let us wish that man
Will live long as he can!
Though miles apart, we’ll share the beauty she displays.
月下独酌
李白
花间一壶酒,独酌无相亲。
举杯邀明月,对影成三人。
月既不解饮,影徒随我身。
暂伴月将影,行乐须及春。
Through gauze-draped windows soft to shed
Her light upon the sleepless bed.
Against man she should have no spite.
Why then when people part is she oft full and bright?
so lightly along!
While sober I feel,
you are both my good friends;
While drunken I reel,
our companionship ends,
But we’ll soon have a greeting
without a goodbye,
How long will the bright moon appear?
Wine-cup in hand, I ask the sky.
I do not know what time of year
It would be tonight in the palace on high.
Riding the wind, there I would fly.
Gazing on Mount Jingting,nor I
Am tired of him,nor he of me.

罗摩士的注释:The ruling families of the Spring and Autumn states of Qin and Jin regularly intermarried;hence marital alliances came to be called Qin-Jin relations . Mao(introductory note ):“In the Spring and Autumn period marriages were habitually entered into by rivals. When Zhen Ying was in Jin, Qin attacked. When Mu Yi was in Qi, Jin severed relations with Qin. Marriage was even less likely to bring harmony to Lv Bu ’ s dealings, for how could the man who had disavowed his fathers have a son -in -law?How could Yuan Shu , who had disavowed his own brother [Shao], have a relationship with a stranger?”
Yet their friendship I’ll borrow
and gaily carouse,
And laugh away sorrow
while spring-time allows.
See the moon how she glances
response to my song;
See my shadow – it dances
My heart contains a hundred bloom in buds,
But, as to find a branch, I have to wait.
