Significance of Oliver Twist
• The novel is a powerful exposure(暴 露) of bourgeois(资产阶级) society. "Oliver Twist" is one of the best works of Dickens. It is said that the publication of "Oliver Twist" brought about some bettering of conditions in the English workhouses during the author's day.

David----the main role of the novel. His father died before he could be give a birth. His mother married Murdstone and became his stepfather. That is the start of his hard life. However after his endeavor, he married his lover Dora—a beautiful and innocent girl. But not long after their marriage, Dora died of disease. At the end of the novel, he lived with Agness.

For the convenience of study,Dicken’s literary career may be roughly divided into 3 periods The first Period(1836--1841) At this stage Dickens believed that all the evils of the capitalism world would be remedied if only men behaved to each other with kindliness,justice,and sympathetic understanding.(P281) This native optimism is characteristic of the petty-bourgeois humanitarians人道主义 of his time
In Oliver Twist , Oliver, an innocent child, is trapped in a world where his only alternatives seem to be the workhouse, Fagin's thieves, a prison, or an early grave. Oliver remains pure-hearted; he steers away from evil when those around him give in to it; and, in proper fairy-tale fashion, he eventually receives his reward – leaving for a peaceful life in the country, surrounded by kind friends. On the way to this happy ending, Dickens explores the kind of life an orphan .

Betsey Trotwood----David’s aunt. She is the key person who changed David’s life a lot. She is a rich , a little strange but also a kind woman. Her poverty was once conquered by Uriah. But just as the saying goes ‘The evil will not triumph over the virtuous.’ she finally recapture her money by their efforts.

is Charles Dickens’s second novel and also is the first novel in the English language to centre throughout on a child protagonist and is also notable for Dickens's unromantic portrayal of criminals and their sordid lives.

His adventures make him the best of friends and the worst of enemies. Fagin费根 - The main antagonist in the story, “The Jew” takes Oliver under his wing and tries to make a pickpocket out of him. He is a powerful crime leader who has an affection for only money and will kill anyone who stands in his way. Nancy南希 - A woman who works for Fagin and tries to help Oliver which eventually leads to her death. he is passionate, caring, and loves Sikes, who eventually kills her. Mr. Brownlow布朗罗 - A man who Oliver’s thief friends rob on the street. He takes Oliver in, and discovers his true parentage.
The Second Period(1842—1850) Dickens ‘s second period bagan from 1842,the year after his visit to America.At this period Dickens’s native optimism about capitalist society was profoundly shaken.
