Research Purposes
To investigate the current situation in English vocabulary teaching in senior high school. To learn what teaching methods the teachers use in teaching English.

Literature Review
In 2001, Huckin and Coady mainly analyzed the problems existing in the vocabulary teaching in the book Second Language Acquisition. In 2005, Allen states the skills of vocabulary teaching in detail in the book The Techniques for Teaching Vocabulary.
Secondly, the amounts of vocabulary directly have a great effect on the students’ skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, etc. Therefore, vocabulary teaching is an important part in English teaching in senior high sc
Research Motivation
Thirdly, grammar teaching has been focusing on in our traditional English teaching while vocabulary teaching is ignored. However, in the national college entrance examination, vocabulary is paid more and more attention to. What’s more, according to Senior Middle School English Curriculum Standard (2003), the number of vocabulary for senior high school students has increased from 2000 to 3000. So how to improve English vocabulary teaching becomes an urgent problem.

Studies on the vocabulary teaching abroad.
In the 1970s, the vocabulary teaching began to be paid attention to abroad. Wilkins was an outstanding representative. In 1993, the English linguist Michael Lewis put forward the concept of Lexical approach. In 2001, Brown and Hatch introduced the vocabulary teaching in the book Vocabulary, Semantics and Language Education.

Research Motivation
Firstly, vocabulary is the basic unit of language. Just as Wilkins(1976:86) holds,“Without grammar, very little could be conveyed, while without vocabulary, nothing could be conveyed.” So vocabulary is worth paying attention to in language teaching and learning .

Significance
The study will be of great use to the students in learning English. Besides, it will help the teachers teach the students better. At the same time, the study on the vocabulary teaching strategy will be instructive in English teaching in senior high school.
