Chinese have been celebrating their harvests in mid-Autumn since ancient times. This/which is very similar to the North American custom of Thanksgiving celebrations. Popular throughout China since Tang Dynasty, the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated in lunar-增译,中国特色 August the 15th for moon worshiping, when Chinese people will reunite with families and enjoy the bright and round moon. In 2006, the Mid-Autumn Festival was listed as one of China’s cultural heritages, and the celebration day was designated by law as a public holiday in 2008. Moon cakes, indispensable in the Mid-Autumn Festival, are always sent to relatives as gifts by Chinese or eaten at family reunion parties/ gatherings.
Traditional moon cakes were always engraved with Chinese characters
such as “寿(longevity),” “福(happiness)” and “和(harmony).”

A) Meg is a lawyer-mom in suburban Washington, D.C., where lawyermoms are thick on the ground(everywhere). Her son Doug is one of several hundred thousand high-school seniors who had a painful fall. The deadline for applying to his favorite college was Nov. 1,and by early October he had yet to fill out the application. More to the point, he had yet to settle on a subject for the personal essay accompanying the application. According to college folklore, a well-turned essay has the power to seduce (诱惑) an admissions committee. “He wanted to do one thing at a time,” Meg says, explaining her son’s delay. “But really, my son is a huge procrastinator (拖延者). The essay is the hardest thing to do, so he’s put it off the longest.” Friends and other veterans of the process have warned Meg that the back and forth between editing parent and writing student can be traumatic (痛苦的).

The world-renown Silk Road is a series of routes connecting the East and the West/, which connects the East and the West. Extending more than 6000 kilometers, it was named after ancient China’s silk trade. Trade in the Silk Road played an important role in the development of civilizations in China, South Asia, Europe and the Middle East. It was through the Silk Road that China’s four inventions including papermaking, compass, gunpowder and movable type were introduced to other places around the world. So were Chinese silk, tea and porcelain. Material and cultural exchanges were mutual that Europe also exported all kinds of commodities and plants to satisfy the needs of Chinese market through the Silk road.
