Environmental problems are too big for individual countries and individual persons to address. In other words, we have reached the stage where the only way to protect the environment is at an international level. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? (May 7, 2011)

In modern society, environmental-related issues have confronted ecological scientists, government agencies and the public. Some people suggest that environmental problem can only be resolved through international cooperation because it is too big for individual countries and people to cope with. Personally, I disagree with this viewpoint.
No doubt, taking actions at an international level is necessary to the final solution to the global environmental problem. The environment-related issues, such as climate change and ozone depletion, are not only the concern of some countries but that of the whole world. Only through international cooperation and coordination can we better solve these problems.
However, we should attach more importance to the contribution of individual countries and persons in this regard. First, the efforts of individual countries and persons are the foundation of the success of international cooperation. As we know, to reach an international agreement on environmental protection is the very first step toward the final solution. What is more crucial and concrete lies in the actual actions taken by individual countries and persons, without which the agreement is merely an empty promise. In addition, the endeavour of individual countries and persons arouses public awareness of environmental protection and promotes international cooperation. For example, thanks to the continuous efforts of the Green Peace groups in the past years, more and more people have realized the importance of environmental protection and a number of related international protocols and agreements have been stipulated.
To sum up, in the age of globalization, every country and individual has the duty to contribute to environmental protection. Only through such efforts can international cooperation become possible and the world become cleaner.。
