首先，除了几个基本的规则外，究竟将数字拼写出来还是使用阿拉伯数字基本上决定于作者的偏好，但是，请在通篇*中保持一致，这一点和参考文献的格式要求类似。
不同的媒体可能使用不同的策略。
在美国，有两个影响最大的文献格式，即The Associated Press Stylebook (AP)和The Chicago Manual of Style (CM)，它们在数字的使用上略有差异。
比如，AP 格式推荐将0到9之间的数字拼写出来，以后都使用数字，直到数字100万。
下面是四个超过999,999的数字的写法，1 million; 20 million; 20,040,086和2.7 trillion。
