The book tells a story about a girl named Tess from Shaftesbury of England, the eldest daughter of John and Joan Durbeyfield. She was a very kind beautiful but poor girl. She unconsciously made the family’s only horse wounded. John and his wife Joan sent Tess to work in their “distant relative” who was a very rich family named d’Urbervilles in order to improve their poor condition. This family’s son Alec liked Tess very much. While in residence at the d’Urbervilles, Alec seduced and raped(强奸) Tess.
Phase the Seventh: Fulfillment(团圆)
Angel found her, but it was too late. She killed Alec and escaped with Angel. She was arrested five days later and was sentenced to death.（判处死刑）
Phase the Fourth: The Consequence
Angel didn’t know Tess’s past. After the wedding, Tess and Angel confessed their past to each other. Tess forgave Angel for his past indiscretions(轻率的行为), but Angel cannot forgive Tess for having a child with: The Woman Pays(惩罚)
Angel is appalled by the revelation, and made it clear that Tess was reduced in his eyes. After a few awkward days, they separated and Angel went to Brazil. Tess returned home.

Phase the Second: Maiden No More(失贞)
Tess returned home and gave birth to a sickly boy who lived only a few weeks. The child is given the name ‘Sorrow’ and Tess buried him in unconsecrated ground(不圣 洁的土地), mading a homemade cross, and laid flowers on his grave in an empty marmalade(橘子酱色的) box.
Phase the Sixth: The Convert(皈依)
She met Alec in accident and he wanted her to be with him. Alec soon came to Flintcomb-Ash to ask Tess to marry him. She told him she was already married. But for her family’s poor condition and she thought Angel will never come back, so she agreed. However, Angel came back and wanted to get her back. When Tess saw Angel, her anger to Alec up to the highest point, she thought her life was destroyed by Alec.
Phase the Third: The Rally(新生)
Tess made another journey away from home to nearby Talbothays Dairy to become a milkmaid to a good-natured dairyman, Mr. Crick. There she met and fell in love with a travelling farmer’s apprentice(学徒) Angel Clare.
